About us

Stawell Gold Mines is located approximately 240 km northwest of Melbourne, 70 km southeast of Horsham and 2 km east of the Stawell CBD. All surface and underground infrastructure associated with the site’s operations are located within the MIN5260 lease area. Stawell Gold Mines has operated at its current location since 1981, which has involved the progressive mining of gold in a series of open pits and extensive underground workings. The surface operations are situated adjacent to the eastern boundary of the Stawell Township and encompass an approximate area of 380 ha. The site’s underground workings extend from the Magdala portal in a north-westerly direction underneath the town. In December 2017, private equity group Arete Capital Partners acquired a controlling interest in Stawell Gold Mines and related assets in Western Victoria, with the intention of returning the site to production by expanding the existing exploration programs to build the mineral inventory for the site. Throughout 2018, underground exploration took place allowing SGM to shore up future reserves resulting in the transition from care and maintenance towards restarting production in early 2019. This was followed by a period of recommissioning the processing plant and re-starting underground mining operations with the first production firing taking place in December 2018, and the first gold pour taking place on 31 January 2019.

Gold is unparalleled in its malleability, conductivity, and resistance to corrosion, making it a highly sought-after commodity in modern and emerging industries. The Minerals Council of Australia released a new publication last week - ‘Golden: The Rise of Industrial Gold’. This publication outlines the growing range of uses of gold in technology and medicine, and the importance of gold to Australia’s economy. Victoria is Australia's third biggest gold producing state, and the leader in gold exploration growth. To read more, click on the link below: https://lnkd.in/g7Y8v-3i

Bolting in underground mining is a process of installing ground support, usually including mesh and bolts. The purpose is to prevent reduce the risk of a rock fall. Essentially a hole is drilled into the walls or “backs” (ceiling) of a rock formation, and a “split set” or “rock bolt” installed to provide support to the roof or sides of the cavity excavation. The position, angle and depth of each bolt is important in installation. SGM and Epiroc have been comparing rock bolting techniques since their international partnership commenced in 2014. In Australia, we use an underground jumbo in a multi-use fashion – our jumbos are used as a scaling machine, then for ground support installation as a rock bolting rig, and then for face drilling to bore holes. In Sweden, and other countries around the world they tend to use three different machines for these parts of the development cycle – a scaling machine, then a rock bolting rig, and then the use their “Boomers” (Jumbo) for face drilling to purely bore holes. That is how Australian bolting techniques, in a nutshell, differ from some parts of the world. #Epiroc #StawellGoldMines

Stawell Gold Mines proudly supports the Minerals Council of Australia's Victoria Mining Careers Program. We host, on average, four schools per year on site. The student groups are introduced to career pathways and study opportunities in the mining sector. The groups receive presentations from different departments discussing the many careers available in mining, ranging from learning on the job, trades, and tertiary qualifications. The students receive a tour around the mine, visiting the mining muster room, mobile maintenance, fixed plant maintenance, and electrical workshops. The students have the opportunity to tour the processing plant and our core farm where they learn about careers in geology and exploration. #stawellgoldmines #mineralscouncilofaustralia #careersinmining

Great story in the Maryborough Advertiser on Highview College's visit to Stawell Gold Mine as part of the the MCA Victoria mining careers program. This MCA program. In one of the largest programs of its kind, 30 schools have taken field trips to mine sites as part of the program to support knowledge about training pathways and local jobs for young people and teachers. As noted by Highview College: “The excursion was very interesting and students were surprised by the size of the site as well as the many occupations that are related to the mining industry”. Thanks to MCA member mines for supporting this important program. Highview students explore mining jobs (https://lnkd.in/gkKvcp7x)

The Stawell Historical Society is located on the Western Highway/Longfield Street and is well worth a visit! From local Aboriginal artefacts and historic regional photography to gold mining history memorabilia. As part of the SGM Community Grants Program, the Stawell Historical Society applied for the purchase of a defibrillator. The Museum and Tourist Information Centre has quite a number of visitors and staff on the premises. This grant helped to provide a safer environment with an emergency facility for the society, staff and visitors. The Stawell Historical Society was established to record, preserve and carry our research into the history of Stawell from 1850s to the present time. #stawellhistoricalsociety #stawellgoldmines #communitygrantsprogram

The Grampians Grape Escape 2024 was a fantastic event - the weather, the activities, the music, the celebrity chefs, and of course, the wine! In addition to sponsoring the Rock-Climbing Wall, Stawell Gold Mines organised a container recycling initiative. This provided the patrons an easy avenue for recycling their bottles, cans, and cartons, whilst allowing us to raise funds for one of our treasured local charities. The funds raised through the container recycling initiative were donated to support the good work of The Stawell Inter Church Council Welfare. The Stawell Inter Church Council Cottage provides emergency relief assistance to those in need in times of financial crisis, whilst maintaining the dignity of those who seek help. Grampians Grape Escape is a not-for-profit yearly festival designed to showcase the talents of our region and support small business, as well as shine a light on the amazing wineries. #GGE2024 #GrampiansGrapeEscape #StawellGoldMines

Drill bits are instrumental to the success of a drillers shift, particularly in development or production drilling in underground mining. Epiroc have been working with Stawell Gold Mines since 2014, and one of their projects was to further refine drill systems, particularly the underground jumbos, or what Epiroc call Boomers. Together, Epiroc and SGM are improving the substantial safety, productivity, and sustainability benefits of underground drilling equipment. #epiroc #stawellgoldmines Image source: https://lnkd.in/eJPFVhwQ
