Restoring Australia's unique landscapes and protecting biodiversity with science-led, on-ground solutions since 1982.

About us

We are the environmental not-for-profit that thinks bigger than the environment. We started conserving and restoring Australia’s landscapes in 1982 and we haven’t stopped since. At Greening Australia, we work on major programs that bring life to landscapes and restore balance to the natural environment in significant areas across Australia. Our hundreds of projects demonstrate conservation on a massive scale, covering millions of hectares of land and protecting thousands of native species. From the warm waters of the Great Barrier Reef to the cool island ark of Tasmania, we’re thinking big to tackle the challenges facing Australia’s unique and diverse landscapes in ways that work for communities, economies and nature.

Recent updates from Mungalla Station: Nywaigi mob gather, eat and camp out at Mungalla Station, talking blue carbon. Recently, over 60 Nywaigi people and their families spent a weekend on Country at Mungalla Station, exploring the benefits of restoring blue carbon ecosystems. James Cook University is also partnering with a handful of Nywaigi youth on a cultural wellbeing study, training them in a survey methodology to document yarns with Elders about the benefits of caring for Country, as well as what benefits they witness for the Country from environmental restoration.   “The weekend was a fantastic gathering of Nywaigi people and project partners with sunshine, great food from an Indigenous chef and lots of discussion about, and growing understanding of blue carbon, we are privileged to walk with First Nations to explore how caring for these systems can provide environmental, economic, and social benefits for all,” said Sharon Marks from Greening Australia.  The Mungalla Blue Carbon Project is funded by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

A common concern among project managers is how to effectively engage with Traditional Owners in a manner that is respectful and beneficial to the project. We have heard from environmental practitioners, landholders, and land managers expressing a desire to engage in the correct way, but uncertain about how to begin. Over the past few years Greening Australia and Barengi Gadjin Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (BGLC), who represent the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagulk peoples, have collaborated to preserve Wotjobaluk Country, establishing trust and understanding over time. One of the things that Greening Australia has learned during this time is how important it is to engage Traditional Owners before your project begins. Traditional Owners have tens of thousands of years’ experience in managing landscapes and caring for Country. It is not only respectful to bring them in on the design and development stage of the project, but it will also likely save you time, effort and resources, because of the depth of knowledge Traditional Owners can provide in the consultation. ◾𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 One of the initial steps you can take is to identify the Traditional Owners in your project area. You can use publicly available websites like the National Native Title Tribunal’s Native Title Vision and the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council’s online map of Registered Aboriginal Parties. These tools are free and offer quick visualisation for identifying Traditional Owner groups. After identifying the Traditional Owners in your project area, you can use an online search to find the website of the Land Council or representative body. Once on the website, look for a contact who can provide you with a quote for Consultative Cultural Heritage and/or On Country services. ◾𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧 The sooner, the better People managing or delivering projects on a timeline may feel pressured to rush certain parts of the process, but reaching out to Traditional Owners before starting a project is the most efficient step to take. Traditional Owners hold valuable knowledge accumulated over tens of thousands of years regarding land care and restoration. Making a simple phone call before commencing a project could prevent the need to make major changes midway through, as you may not have had all the necessary information during the design and development stage. Engaging with Traditional Owners during the design and development stage is a respectful approach to the process, representing the first step in establishing a relationship of trust and respect with Traditional Owners. Today is World Environment Day, and this year’s theme is land restoration – our specialty!   Restoration involves the recovery of species, ecosystems or landscapes that have been damaged or degraded. This process aims to re-establish habitat to allow wildlife communities to thrive once again – to put back what we’ve lost.   At Greening Australia, we’ve been restoring landscapes for over 40 years and have rebuilt thousands of hectares of habitat to date. Our planting projects provide a multitude of benefits, including food and shelter for Australia’s unique wildlife, tackling salinity on farmland, preventing millions of tonnes of eroded soil from reaching waterways, cooling temperatures in urban areas, and much more.   We can’t turn back time but we can restore forests, revive waterways and bring back soils. Will you be part of #GenerationRestoration? #WorldEnvironmentDay2024

It was fantastic having so many helping hands from Nestlé Nespresso SA at our Native Seed Centre for Restoration yesterday. Hosted by Nindethana and our Sydney team, around 100 volunteers planted over 8,000 native grass species, making a significant impact on our projects in the area. We love connecting our partners with opportunities to make lasting contributions to our restoration work. Nespresso partners with Greening Australia to restore essential habitats for some of our iconic and threatened animals, building resilience into landscapes from Sydney to the Gippsland region of Victoria. Great shots from Nespresso ANZ's volunteer day. Thank you Greening Australia for hosting us at your facility. Some interesting things I learnt 1. A healthy Australian bush is not just tall healthy-looking trees; the undergrowth and native plants play a crucial role for biodiversity in Australia. 2. Regeneration starts with the seed, a 10kg bag of Eucalyptus seeds can regenerate hectares of land. 🌱 3. Getting on your hands and knee's planting lots of seedings is harder than it looks, my knees and back felt it the next day, my body is apparently 36 but felt like 66. The utmost respect to the team at Greening. 4. Our guide Dave has changed my perception of plants, apparently, they are filthy little creatures 😂 (if you know, you know). 5. Over 3000 seedlings are now in the ground ready to help regenerate landscapes in Australia. Love working for an employer like Nestlé Nespresso SA that provide us volunteer leave so we can be part of something bigger. Also great to see a lot of the Nespresso Professional team taking part and enjoying the day Dino Malagic Michael Lowe Matthew Angus William Lasses Eloise Roberts Sam Quoyle Scott Stephens Deanna Brown Juny Lie

It's National Reconciliation Week and we're thinking a lot about healing connections – between people, and between people and nature. Wirangu and Nauo man Jody Miller, Nywaigi and Munburra man Jacob Cassady, who have worked alongside Greening Australia on restoration projects, and Bandjalang woman Janelle Randall-Court, Greening Australia's cultural educator for the Cooling the Schools program, share their thoughts. #NRW2024 #NowMoreThanEver

We worked with the Woorabinda Pastoral Company to support them to implement more sustainable grazing practices and reduce sediment and nutrient runoff into waterways.   It’s keeping soil and nutrients on farm, improving land condition, investing in sustainable and profitable business models, all while helping protect the health of the Great Barrier Reef 🪸   The Mackenzie Water Quality Program, part of the Fitzroy Water Quality Program regional initiative, has been funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s #ReefTrust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, and delivered with Woorabinda Pastoral Company, Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council, and RCS Australia. Greening Australia and Conscious Investment Management (CIM) have announced a new partnership to acquire and restore Australian landscapes, backed by an innovative financing model. Our first investment as part of this partnership is the purchase of Dixieland, a 755-hectare property in Southern NSW. Greening Australia will act as landowner and project developer and CIM has provided financing for the project with repayments linked to the generation and sale of biodiverse environmental planting ACCUs.   We aim to plant 140,000 native trees and shrubs on this property by 2025, enhancing biodiversity and climate resilience. The restoration will benefit woodland bird species and the critically endangered Monaro Tableland Cool Temperate Grassy Woodland.   Learn more about this project and partnership here: https://lnkd.in/dPnAtzAt
