From Western Australian deserts to NSW rainforests, Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs) are land and sea Country managed by First Nations groups. IPAs support better nature protections and local jobs. Twelve new IPAs have been announced that, once dedicated, are estimated to protect 7.5 million hectares of land – an area larger than the size of Tasmania – and 450,000 hectares of sea Country. These new IPAs safeguard biodiversity, providing habitats for our iconic koala, as well as threatened native species such as the greater bilby, princess parrot, and eastern curlew. The expanded IPA program delivers on our Closing the Gap Implementation Plan and go towards our commitment to protect 30 per cent of land by 2030.
