We all know what bushfires are. And for thousands of years, cultural burning was used to protect Country from them. 🔥 How is this unique ancestral Knowledge now helping to shape the future of our precious koalas? 🌿 Lean in as the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) and WWF use cultural burning to protect the last koalas of Minjerribah. 🐨 🎥 Stradbroke Island koala videos © Bryan Foster - Great Developments Publishers, Gold Coast #NAIDOCWeek #NAIDOCWeek2024 #KeeptheFireBurning #BlakLoudandProud

Today we proudly welcomed the federal government’s announcement of 12 new Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs)! 🥳 But what IS an IPA? 🤔 An Indigenous Protected Area, or IPA, is an area of land or sea cared for by Traditional Owners, who enter an agreement with the Federal Government to manage the area for biodiversity. These areas strengthen Australia’s biodiversity and are vital to expanding Indigenous-led conservation efforts. 👐 “IPAs provide a physical and spiritual connection to Country for Traditional Owners. IPAs help First Nations people in their unique and invaluable contribution to Australia’s 30x30 commitment. But we call on the federal government to provide Traditional Owners the support and resources they need to ensure these areas are adequately protected and managed. The new IPAs will protect 7.5 million hectares of land and 450,000 hectares of sea Country. That is an important contribution towards Australia’s commitment to protect 30% of lands and 30% of oceans by 2030.” - Cliff Cobbo, First Nations Principal Advisor, for WWF-Australia 🐨💚 More here: https://lnkd.in/gKyuWMjM #NAIDOCWeek

Is it legal to log native forests in NSW while they’re being considered for a national park? 🤔 Yes! The NSW Government has committed to creating the Great Koala National Park – but while native forests on the mid north coast are being considered for inclusion, state-owned Forestry Corp of NSW continues to cut them down. We were on the ground at Mistake State Forest last week, and so was Forestry Corp. Dr Stuart Blanch, Senior Manager of Land Clearing and Restoration at WWF-Australia, encountered active logging in this critical sanctuary for endangered species like koalas, greater gliders and glossy black cockatoos. This destruction is legal, but it doesn’t have to be. The NSW Government can stop logging in these vital areas. We’re calling on Chris Minns, Penny Sharpe, Tara Moriarty and the NSW Government to STOP native forest logging, PROTECT areas under assessment, and RESTORE the damage that’s being done. Share this post to help us reach a larger audience. Together, we can protect our natural, green places. Forestry Corporation of NSW

An exciting announcement to start off #NAIDOCWeek! Local rangers from Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) are collaborating with WWF-Australia, WWF Verdensnaturfonden / WWF Denmark and Danish drone company Robotto Co, and are transforming koala conservation on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). With the fantastic support of the LEGO Group (QATO Foundation), they are now using advanced drones to spot koalas, significantly increasing detection rates — 52 koalas were found in an area where only one had been found using ground search methods! The drone’s thermal camera locates koalas, allowing precise planning of controlled burns to protect their habitats. #NAIDOCWeek #NAIDOCWeek2024 #KeeptheFireBurning #BlakLoudandProud 📽️: 9 News

🚨 Update for Heard and McDonald Islands! 🌊 The Australian Government has announced a proposal to expand the Heard and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve near Antarctica! 🐧🐋 While this is a positive step, critical feeding grounds for penguins, fish, and seabirds still need stronger protection. This pristine sanctuary, home to species like sperm whales, elephant seals, and macaroni penguins, plays a crucial role in preserving biodiversity and protecting vulnerable marine habitats. “...the new zoning plan fails to provide increased protection for most of the high conservation value areas identified in the government’s own scientific review and an independent science review.” says Richard Leck, Head of Oceans at WWF-Australia. “Australia is incredibly fortunate to be a custodian of this incredible place, and we really should be giving it the protection it deserves.” 🔗Learn More: https://lnkd.in/gyztuaCG

"This meeting could've been an email." Did you know the wedge-tailed eagle is Australia’s largest bird of prey and can soar at heights of up to 2,000m? 🦅 They’ve also been known to dine on kangaroos. With a wingspan of up to 2.8 meters and eyesight sharp enough to spot prey from incredible distances, these beautiful birds can dive at speeds of over 120 km/h. Best to steer clear of that gaze if you're small and furry. 🐭

🌿 Found: Logging Loophole in Australia’s Nature Laws! We are urgently calling on Senators to strengthen Australia’s environmental laws by closing a loophole that allows the bulldozing of native forests. Despite the passage of three bills through the lower house today, critical amendments to halt this under Regional Forestry Agreement exemptions were overlooked. WWF-Australia’s CEO Dermot O’Gorman says: “These agreements create a loophole that allows logging to happen without any assessment under federal legislation… If we allow this to continue, the loss will be irreversible.” “Every year, an estimated 500,000 hectares of native forests and woodlands are bulldozed across Australia, destroying the homes of koalas, greater gliders, and other endangered species.” We now have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to address these loopholes in our nature laws. It's crucial to amend legislation to ensure the independence and integrity of the EPA and establish robust 'nature positive' laws under Environment Information Australia (EIA). Join us in thanking Dr Sophie Scamps, Zoe Daniel, Allegra Spender, Zali Steggall, Kylea Tink, and Andrew Wilkie for moving critical amendments and standing up for stronger nature laws! A special mention to Kate Chaney and Helen Haines who also spoke in support of a number of these amendments. Uncover more here: https://lnkd.in/grHnrV63
