This #NAIDOCweek we’re celebrating the students from the Warreen Beek Ranger program, which offers conservation training for First Peoples. Now in its seventh year, the course was created by Elders and community members for First Peoples. This year is the biggest class yet, with 17 students! As 2023 Yorta Yorta and Dja Dja Wurrung graduate Gemma Cadd told us, “It’s good to learn from other cultures and hear stories from them and all the different experiences.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gRJpaas9 #NAIDOC2024 The Warreen Beek Ranger program is facilitated by Trust for Nature in partnership with Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, Wurundjeri Corporation and Holmesglen and supported by the Port Phillip Bay Fund, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action 📷 : Warreen Beek Rangers class of 2024.

We protect and restore habitat on private land in Victoria. Forever.
About us
For over 50 years, Trust for Nature has been protecting ecosystems and wildlife on private land in Victoria, in collaboration with private landholders. In Victoria, 62% of the land is privately owned, so working with private landholders is critical to secure the future of our unique ecosystems and species. Across our 40+ nature reserves, and 1500+ properties owned by individuals, our passionate team helps restore, preserve and improve habitats, engaging with local communities and Traditional Owners to share knowledge, restore cultural practices and generate greater outcomes for Victoria’s unique plant and animal species. To date we have protected more than 110,000 hectares of private land. We support private land conservation through conservation covenants; an ongoing stewardship support program; a Revolving Fund and the purchase of land for permanent protection; restoration and biodiversity offsets. Together, we are creating a future in which Victoria's nature is valued, protected and thriving.

On Victoria’s northern plains, farmers are helping save the critically endangered Plains-wanderer. While much of this unique birds’ habitat has been lost to cropping, grazing can actually help keep the grasslands healthy – a win-win for farmers and for conservation. As Trust for Nature team member David Dore says: “Part of our job is not to be critical of other farming systems, but to remind people there are other ways of doing it that are a bit more in harmony with Australia’s ecosystem.” Read more on Guardian Australia: https://lnkd.in/gE-w-jRe Zoos Victoria BirdLife Australia

Right in the heart of Victoria’s Strathbogie Ranges, Olwyn and Ben found their sanctuary over 25 years ago. Realising the importance of the forest on their land, they set about protecting it forever with a conservation covenant. As Olwyn says, “It gives us a feeling of comfort that the place isn’t going to be wrecked.” Thanks Olwyn and Ben! Here on Bunurong Country, we’re working with landholders to restore habitat at Archies Creek. Landholders at Archies Creek have protected some of the last remaining habitat in the Powlett River/Kugerungmome catchment with conservation covenants. Now they’re working hard to improve its health. One of the major threats is Sweet Pittosporum, an invasive native species that smothers local native plants. Trust for Nature and West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority are helping landholders remove weeds, encourage natural regeneration and replant indigenous trees and shrubs. All part of creating healthier habitat for wildlife and waterways. This project is supported by West Gippsland CMA through funding from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action #OurCatchmentsOurCommunities program.

Mohya and John Davies always respected the wetlands at the edge of their farm in Foster. This spectacular landscape is part of globally important wetlands that provide habitat for threatened migratory shorebirds. Recognising their significance, Mohya and John are protecting the wetland on their property forever, helping this critical habitat adapt to rising seas. "It’s something we should do for the environment. I see it as a symbiotic relationship between farming and conservation," says Mohya. Thanks Mohya and John! With the arrival of the cool weather, we recently worked with the Country Fire Authority (CFA) to burn part of our Naringaningalook Grassland Reserve 🔥 🔥 Although it looks destructive, burning like this is a great way to look after the grasslands on the reserve and helps the grassland wildflowers to grow and bloom. Which in turn creates the perfect habitat for grassland wildlife like the endangered Striped Legless Lizard. Grasslands like this one thrive when burned every 3-5 years. And now we can’t wait to see the results come spring 🌻 🌷 🌼 Learn more about Naringaningalook: https://lnkd.in/gNiKDJwR

We need your help to create a thriving biodiversity patchwork for generations to come. Nearly 80% of habitat found on private land in Victoria is rare or threatened. We’ve identified the areas of habitat that are most important to conserve to protect threatened wildlife, restore the health of nature, and fight climate change. Make a donation today to protect these priority patches: https://lnkd.in/gucM_Trc
