All Australians actively caring for the land and water that sustains us

About us

There are approximately 6,000 volunteer environmental groups across Australia that fall under the Landcare umbrella. Where possible, and through the support of our corporate and philanthropic partners, Landcare Australia provides resources and distributes funding to these groups, while also raising awareness of the Landcare movement through national promotional campaigns including Landcare Week and the National Landcare Awards. Landcare Australia brokers partnerships with corporate and government which enable the organisation to administer grants programs for groups around the country, helping ensure that a difference can continue to be made at grass roots level.

🔥 Keep the Fire Burning! 🔥 In celebration of this year’s NAIDOC Week theme, which honours amplifying voices, reclaiming narratives, and sustaining the flame of pride and unity, we want to highlight the Bangerang Aboriginal Corporation. The Bangerang Traditional Owners are dedicated to passing down cultural knowledge to youth while working closely with non-Indigenous landholders to share knowledge and care for Country. They collaborate with the Warby Ranges Landcare Group to develop and deliver shared outcomes for landscape health. Check out the photos from a recent cultural burn managed by the Bangerang Ngalan Bitja Rangers, a newly established ranger team. The location is privately owned by a member of the Warby Range Landcare Group and contains an ephemeral wetland where Swamp Wallaby Grass creates thick thatch making it difficult for native herbs to grow. While the dry conditions make it a good time to burn and clear the area for spring, some dense ground cover is preserved for Brown Quail habitat, and native herbs like Swamp Billy Buttons are planted to improve site health and diversity. Cultural burning empowers the Bangerang People, providing opportunities to act on their cultural right to speak and care for Country. We are proud to support the Bangerang Aboriginal Corporation, in partnership with Steadfast Group Limited. #NAIDOC2024 #NAIDOCWeek #BlakLoudProud #FirstNations #LandcareAustralia #KeepTheFireBurning

🏆The State and Territory Landcare Awards championed many First Nations organisations and landcare groups working together on environmental projects. 📣 Let’s celebrate the Woppaburra TUMRA Aboriginal Corporation, the proud winner of the First Nations Landcare Collaboration Award in Queensland! 🐋Woppaburra are from a wider Whale Dreaming Indigenous Community around coastal Australia. The spiritual saltwater totem for the Woppaburra and their island homelands is Mugga Mugga (Humpback Whale). It is their life-long cultural responsibility to protect our clan totem and its environment, sea country (al-li). 🪸The Woppaburra People have joined with the Reef Authority and Queensland Parks and Wildlife in a seven-year Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreement (TUMRA) that will enable them to decide on their cultural hunting protocols and to co-manage their Sea Country, providing a platform for Woppaburra voices in decision making regarding activities that impact their culture and Country. 🫱🏾🫲🏽The agreement also supports the capacity of the Woppaburra people to return to Country in management positions and allows for cross cultural awareness raising with Woppaburra people sharing their cultural perspectives with scientists, tourism operators, NRM groups, industry and the wider community including the Australian Institute of Marine Science, CSIRO, Reef Ecologic, JCU, CQU and many others. Are you part of a project that partners First Nations originations and landcare? Share your story with us during National NAIDOC Week! #NAIDOC #NAIDOCWEEK #NAIDOC2024 #KeepTheFireBurning🖤💛❤️💚💙🤍
