Review of Sunset Cove
Reviewed Jan 18, 2016
We stopped here for breakfast and fell in love. The food was fresh and prepared to order and served on a screen porch overlooking the gentle blue-green water on the cove. Everything you think of for an island getaway is here. Fancy? No, but just what the Dr ordered if you want to beat the crowds and go off the grid for a few days. Cute conch style cottage housing that I understand from the manager is very basic and no frills but they provide kayaks and bikes. The view is unparalleled and we hear the sunset from this spot is the best on the island. Did I mention the hammocks swinging between the palm trees?

The Sunset Cove is located about three miles east of the airport. My wife and I stayed here for nine consecutive nights. Dave, the owner, is a tremendous host and he will go out of his way to make sure that all of his guests are taken care of and have a good time on Little Cayman. The hotel and the hotel rooms are quite simple, however, the beach and the views are totally awesome. It would be hard to find better views. After visiting all of the hotels on Little Cayman (not many to choose from) we think that The Sunset Cove has the best views and the nicest beach. We ate breakfast each morning in the Beach Bum which is a sister restaurant on the same property. For dinners we tried to visit as many other restaurants on then island as we could. The water here is so nice and clear and is only about five feet deep. One day we kayaked over to Owen Island where we spent the afternoon. Sitting on the beach making new friends was so much fun and enjoyable.

Notes:
(1)The Sunset Cove does not have an alcohol permit so you need to bring your own liquor.
(2) As mentioned previously, there are some serious mosquito/no see ums issues around here, especially at sunrise and sunset, so bring mosquito spray.
(3) Food on Little Cayman is quite expensive.

First off I will say David did a wonderful job of making the stay the best it possibly could be. Location is a little over 3 miles east of the airport and the beach (cove) view is very nice and peaceful. There are some mosquito issues here at especially at sunrise and sunset so bring mosquito spray (one gal at the resort looked like she was eaten alive). Although this isn't only an issue for Sunset as we saw folks from other places that had a good number of bites from being out at sunset. David's service I would rate 5 out of 5, our issues really were that the place needed some serious updating. Water pressure was extremely low, showerhead was the height of "little people", bed was worse than dorm quality, no hangers, no storage for clothing, very dated and basic, air conditioners were extremely noisy in many of the units. If it wasn't for David we would rate this a "2" as the resort needed some money spent in refurbishing (probably a good $250K needed to refresh this place and make it an enjoyable inviting resort both inside and out). We had no internet access in our room but internet in the common area and outside was OK.

This is a place to go to experience Little Cayman Caribbean Style! Very quiet, beautiful sunsets, casual accommodations. Leave your mainland expectations at home! Not a fancy hotel with bars or a swimming pool, but a superb manager David who is very accommodating in many ways. Excellent place to enjoy various water sports or just relaxing in a hammock!

This is a basic resort with exceptional food and staff. We only stayed there for one night. Dave the manager does an excellent job with what he has to work with. Very friendly and professional. The resort is being upgraded so it is getting better but I have to review it as it was when we were there. Room is a typical hotel room, bed was ok, ac wasn't that cold but it was enough, tv in room but no reception, no hot water but we also did not say anything so it was probably easily fixable. Ken runs the kitchen and makes some excellent food, seriously excellent food (and I am picky). When he says he has the best burgers on the island he is not kidding!. Beach is nice, great sunsets. No pool, no bar, no dive shop, no ice maker (owners take note-this needs to be addressed!). These are a few items we require for a longer stay. Long term if they continue to upgrade and improve resort I expect it to become much more popular. It is worth the price/value and is significantly less expensive than other locations on the island.

With excellent service from David and Ken the Chef, where else can you get a hotel with a friendly Iguana outside the chalet door and a baby stingray visiting the beach for his breakfast.
If you want a turned-down bed, chocolates on your pillow and a raked beach bereft of nature try the Ritz Carlton. If you want real living, stay for a few days at Sunset Cove, Little Cayman. The rooms are basic but functional. The complex is ideally located in the south sound, allowing a bicycle ride to Bloody Bay wall for a day of snorkelling on the north reef, plus an additional trip to Point of Sands which has a secluded shallow beach rich in marine life. For our final day we paddled across to the uninhabited Owen Island. With only 20mins of kayaking we had an island all to ourselves. Bliss.
Armed with 50+ suntan lotion and a bottle of "OFF" insect repellent, eat well with Ken, enjoy nature and return to a place which exemplifies what Cayman should be. The wonderfully hospitable David collects and returns to the airport and if you ask really nicely you can stop at the Red Booby Pond for a quick bird feast with the flocking tweeters at dusk.

Room tip: They are all good as they are all on right on the beach
