Terrific/Pleasant/Nostalgic!

Review of Hotel Bären
Reviewed Mar 18, 2024
Me & 44 of my American friends booked our stay here. 7 days We were all here to ski & snowboard. I’ve read some of the reviews complaining about floors/carpets/walking up stairs/shower, and some other small issues.
My experience was short of nothing but 4 star hospitality. The staff rolled out the red carpet for us. Especially with our American trends, foods, different foot demands, loud, staying up late nights, karaoke 🎤 nights..
Whatever we asked for, they tried their best to accommodate us all. My room was always cleaned up @ 9am, after breakfast got back to my room, like I never slept in the bed @all.
Yeah the building is old, to me the old charm was very surreal. I loved the warm and still of the nights on the patio. How could anyone complain about floor cracking/sounds? You’re surrounded by the beautiful mountain 🏔️ landscape and architecture everywhere you look. I tell you, some people can never be satisfied.
All of our meals were fantastic, breakfast served every morning. Dinners well planned and extremely delicious, soup/salad/main/desert.
The 3rd night, the boss opened up the wine seller, so that we could enjoy fine wine/food/cheese/ and live music. His lovely wife, and 2 other fine ladies sang & played instruments 🪗. The walk down the hill to the train station wasn’t difficult at all, you could easily wait for the bus 0.061kilo or 200’ away from hotel.
1 night, the management allowed us to set up a movie night to watch a 007 movie 🎥. Another late night, “ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE”… Some scenes from the mountains 🏔️ that we ⛷️ skied on. INTERLAKEN was phenomenal, as well as GRINDELWALD, the TOP OF EUROPE..
JUNGFRAU and all of its glory, I still can’t believe how someone could ever complain about superficial things in a room or hotel.
The locals were also very polite/pleasant, always a nice welcome, hello, good afternoon/good day/good evening. Let me apologize for such a long review, but whenever I visit Switzerland 🇨🇭 again. Here is were I will stay, where I am welcomed & where they treated me very well.
Oh P.S. my UV light tells the truth, my room was spotless, my towels/wash clothes/ bedding/ table surfaces/ bathroom 🚽, all clean….
Well done 👍, Hotel Baren….

I have to say I was most disappointed , having stayed there in the past , but also looking for an alterative as the Heimat has now closed down
Reception staff were delightful
Room was Ok , very clean and very swiss , which is perfect , but the shower !!!! it is dirty , dated and dangerous , every time I tried to turn around the shower control moved , so I was either faced with freezing water or boiling water , really not pleasant at all
But the biggest issue was the restaurant
Firstly to say the younger gentleman that was on that evening was great , helpful and did his job well
HOWEVER the older gentleman ruined our evening
We ordered a salad to start with , which arrived and looked lovely and fresh , but we had literally had it put in front of us for about 90 seconds I would say , and the older gentleman brought up our mains , I thought he had made a mistake and looked at him , and said we had only just received our starters , which at that point he just popped them on the side of our table and turned and left
No apology , no taking them back to the kitchen , just put them down and turned around
We had no choice but to disregard our starters , move our mains plate our self and start eating to avoid them getting cold
The worst service I have received in a very long time , in fact I don't think this has ever happened to us before
I did mention it to the receptionist , who was equally appalled , and said she would pass the comments on , I expected an email at the very least , but nothing

Love the old school vibes from the 1700s building. The staff was awesome and very helpful. The restaurant had some yummy food, day or night. Breakfast was enough to fuel you up for a full day of adventures. Of course, the great coffee may have also helped. Then, the dinner was off the charts. We liked the quiet and cozy atmosphere, as well as the views towards the mountains. The bus can help with travel from the train station. But, the quick walk up the hill isn't all that bad.

Room tip: Don't forget to fill up your water bottle right across the street. The $10 pizza is a great deal for budget travelers.

Booked here as close to rail for mountains and town (10 minute walk), plus it looked quaint with good rooms. Price comparable with many as Switzerland is still most expensive country to visit in Europe, reflecting domestic high salaries (maybe 3x that of UK or France). Initial impression not great, as another elderly guest was rebuked at reception when she complained about stairs (a lot) and was told she should have read before booking, no offer to carry baggage. Sort of set the tone for us. A take it or leave it attitude to service? However, chap was polite with us, gave us keys basic ideas, and we paid, as asked, before even seeing room, another no no for us normally. We told him we'd not have breakfast next morning as we were on 1st train up into the mountains. Room turned out to be not that bad, shower room a bit of a pokey after thought. Spotted a nice sharp damaged base to mirror above water glasses, before we cut knuckles on it. Needs replacing. It is an old building, but somebody ought to nail some floorboards down after maybe doing some sound insulation between, as every step on floor above and round about is very very loud, meaning you sleep late and wake early. Some stains on carpet in various places. Having traveeled all day, we opted to eat first night at half board, but wine, coffee and water is all added on at £50!! 2nd night we ate out, and had an uneventful but noisy nights sleep in the creaky ship style room both evenings. Breakfast was good on 2nd morning, even some cooked bacon and eggs - good for Brits. On leaving, reception would not deduct the 2 breakfasts we didn't have, (and which we said on arrival we didn't want) from the meal "extras" we did have and want (and which we thought would be included), which seemed highly unreasonable, if not totally intransigent and so left a feel of being pick pocketted, as their rooms and prices are not at the cheap end, nor top drawer as in photo on site. Dinner staff were impeccable, if a tad over attentive, the meal was also very good food, so no complaints there except at 40+ per person wine and coffee (and certainly water) should really be inclusive as is our experience most everywhere in France on priced "menu" perhaps not en carte. So, not our happiest stop over ever, we felt like minor inconveniences at times, not entirely value for money, hence the average score. Probably would not go back.

Room tip: Ear plugs for creaky floors, a fat wallet, check every possible "extra" charge before booking, there "is no lift", little old lady was told!

I was really impressed by the helpful nature of the staff, particularly the manager, think his name is Salim (or something like that). The hotel is clean and the breakfast was good, even for a vegetarian, with several selections. After we checked-in the manager, carried one of my bags to our room which was on 3rd floor; we carried the other two.

While there are positives for this hotel, one must bear a couple of things mind. This is a 300 year hotel, it has no elevators. Be prepared to carry your bags to upper floors. Second, this hotel is located on a hillock, about one Kilometer from the Wilderswil train station. So it is a bit of walk and one needs to hire a cab, if you there is luggage. The staff at the Interlaken Ost advised to get a cab, which we did and it adds about 50 CHF. Third, there is no air-conditioning. The two nights we stayed were hot and we felt the need for a/c. There are several other hotels nearby Wilderswil train station, which may be better choices, with regards to the issues I described.

Rustic Swiss hotel. Est 1706. Nice, but simple rooms. No elevators and no wait staff, so need to be able to carry your luggage up the stairs. Nice restaurant and great included breakfast. Beautiful mountain village. Would definitely stay here again.

Room tip: Stairs, no elevators
