The Leonardo Hotel Barcelona Las Ramblas is frequently commended for its exemplary service and impeccable cleanliness, with guests highlighting the spotless rooms and diligent housekeeping. While the rooms are cozy and equipped with essential amenities, some guests feel they can be cramped and report occasional noise issues. The prime location near Las Ramblas is a hit for its convenience, though opinions on value diverge as some consider the amenities and services, like breakfast and locker storage, to be overpriced. The rooftop pool and atmosphere are generally well-received, despite some negative encounters with reception staff.

So for a tourist hotel I want a good location and for it to be clean and quiet. I don't need a massive room as I'm not working and should really be out exploring. This ticked all the boxes. 2 minutes from the bottom end of the Ramblas, and close enough to the market to have breakfast and lunch there (I didn't eat in the hotel). Room wasn't large but was fine. Quiet. Nice walk in shower, with a little outside balcony. No USB ports. Staff were friendly and helpful. I'd definitely go back.

Great location, just two side streets from Las Ramblas and the Boqueria (food market). Arrived early to a warm welcome, and able to go straight to our room.
Great comfortable family sized room, (Deluxe), water and coffee machine in room.
Lovely continental breakfast, great service and food quality. Children loved it.
Small pool on roof, plenty of space to sunbathe and a pool bar.

If you are reading this I have done the hard research for you. I travel a lot for pleasure so I am always searching for the best value for the money. I researched and read countless reviews to find an affordable hotel with walking distance to Las Ramblas. (4-5 minute walk) that had a great price and great reviews and easy airport transportation.

Well here it is :

After landing at BCN for those of you who don’t know there is NO Uber, Lyft any ride share programs in Barcelona. Making Taxi and train/bus your only option. Making the taxi’s here super expensive.

Best way and cheapest is to take the Aerobus. It runs every 5 minutes from the airport and you get off at the last stop. It stops only 4 times. (catalyna stop). It was $7 Euros a person. After that it is a 12 minute easy flat walk to the hotel. Just FYI we took a taxi on our return trip to the airport and we paid $55 Euros for a 10 minute taxi ride to airport for 3 people. (Very expensive) but standard.

After we got off the Aerobus Google Maps led us with no errors to our hotel. You walk down almost the entirety of Las Rambals Street and make 2 turns. The hotel is located few blocks behind Las Rambals in a old part of town. Which means the hotel is in a old renovated building.

Which I noticed people complaining about the room sizes. Have they not traveled before that’s normal for Asian and European standards. You’re in a building from the 1800s and it’s beautiful. Also I read reviews people complaining about rooms with no windows. When you book the cheapest rooms it TELLS YOU.. that the room has no windows and the sq. Footage of the room. So don’t act shocked and ignorant. We paid the $10 extra and each got a room with a tiny balcony. The lobby and rooms are renovated to the 21st century and super modern. They preserved the original staircase and it’s beautiful. The hotel also has 2 lifts for your luggage.

Our room was not ready as we arrived early. The hotel has showers and a luggage storage room. The luggage storage is large lockers YOU WILL NEED $2 EUROS IN CHANGE to pay each locker. Which can fit about 2 carry on sized bags and a large purse. The luggage room is not complimentary however it has 5 cameras inside at every angle so for $2 E your luggage is not going anywhere. They took down our phone #’s and called us when our rooms were ready.

There is a super bar in the lobby with the best sangria. It also has a happy hour special everyday with BOGO drinks. You can walk anywhere and everywhere. On the corner is a awesome walk up coffee pastry bar and a bakery. The hotel has a massive breakfast buffet for $12 Euros we did that one day and the other days got fresh espresso and bakery goods down the street.

We walked to the famous market 5 min, the beach dock with boat tours 10 min , shopping mall 10 min, downtown las rambals 5 min. Plus everywhere else. We took the train to Sagrada Familia which was so easy. The stop was 5 minutes from the hotel.

Have a great trip!

OK, as always I’ve written more here than I set out to, but if you plough through to the end I think you’ll find it useful

The Leonardo Hotel Barcelona is in an excellent position – just about 5 minutes’ walk from the Liceu metro station on La Ramblas. Once on La Ramblas the harbour is about 15 minutes stroll south, and Passeig de Gracia (where the posh shops are) is about 15 minutes stroll north.

There are numerous restaurants nearby and a very well-stocked supermarket (“Condis”) less than 50 metres down the road from the hotel. On the rare occasions when Condis is shut (like on Sundays) there is another supermarket on the corner of the hotel’s road, just another 50 metres or so away.

The hotel itself is good with friendly staff who speak good English. We stayed for four nights and each day our room was tidied and cleaned to a high standard – the only problem being that on two of the four nights we were not left spare toilet rolls and had to ask for them.

The breakfast room is cramped and would be much easier to navigate if they removed a couple of tables. There is a good variety of breakfast though - cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit, pastries, breads (and an efficient toaster!), cold meats & cheeses. Different cooked offerings each day augmented the regular scrambled eggs and unsmoked bacon (which was a bit bland and not to our taste, but would obviously appeal to others). The coffee machine dispenses espresso, Americano, cappuccino etc., and hot water for the selection of teas. Three types of fruit juice were available and there was jam and butter for toast, but no low-fat spread or that essential British breakfast-staple Marmite.

The roof terrace is a real asset. It is accessible by lift, is nicely finished with deck boards and artificial grass, and has a small pool where children can swim and adults can sit to cool off. The view is mostly of other rooftops, but you can see the Christopher Columbus monument and cable cars, and there is a small bar which is presumably open in high-season. There is also a soft-drinks vending machine if you’re feeling too lazy to go down to the supermarket.

Our room had just a few minor niggles: No room around the fancy designer sink for tedious practical things like toothbrushes, moisturisers etc, so we had to live out of our washbag (which was balanced on the adjoining free-standing unit); no drawers in the room, so we had to live out of our suitcases (though there was sufficient hanging space); no mirror in the bedroom.

Another annoying thing was the positioning of the TV opposite the bed rather than opposite the sofa - imagine walking into the room, bed on the right, TV on the left, then further into the room, sofa on the left, bare wall on the right, making it impossible to see the TV from the sofa. Who would rather sit on a bed to watch TV than a sofa??? The room either needs a second TV on the bare wall, or the existing TV moved to the bare wall.

I would advise that unless you are a very heavy sleeper you ask not to be positioned on the ground floor. Our room was right next to the bar, which was OK as the bar closed at 23:00 and the people/noise had gone by about 23:10. However, there is a computer for the use of guests in the corner of the bar, and on one night a guest was using it to watch a video with a very loud soundtrack. We tolerated this until almost midnight, then I went out in my night attire to ask the guest to keep the noise down (thankfully he spoke English so I was able to get my point across). He replied that he was unaware that there were any rooms on the ground floor, and then did turn the sound down to a more reasonable level. However, we could still hear it (and his smoker’s cough) until about 00:45, and were not amused.

It would be good if the hotel could put a notice next the computer reading something like: “Use of this computer between 23:00 and 08:00 must be done in ABSOLUTE SILENCE to avoid disturbing guests in nearby rooms.”

A final thing to say about the area (which you will observe if you take a Google Street View wander around the streets adjoining the hotel before booking, as you always should) – many of the shop units have steel shutters which are covered in graffiti. Trading hours are completely unpredictable, and at any one time about half of the shops might be closed with the shutters down. There doesn’t seem to be any way of knowing if a shop unit is permanently disused or merely closed for a while, but what you can be sure of is if/when the shutters roll up there is about a 75% chance that the shop behind will be selling either fast food or mobile phone accessories. All of this adds up to making the area feel very down-market – even, perhaps, intimidating. However, there are a few tourists around, and lots of regular people going about their business well into the evening, and we never felt threatened (though obviously normal precautions against pickpockets are well advised).

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Barcelona, and that was in no small part due to the position and comfort of the hotel.

Finally, here are some tips about visiting Barcelona…

1: Buy an Hola transport card online and pick it up at the Tourist Information booth in Terminal 2 (area B) of the airport when you arrive. It will almost certainly save you money, but even if it doesn’t it’s well worth having as you won’t then have to queue at ticket machines in metro stations, or talk to locals to get bus tickets (no offence to the locals, but I speak virtually no Spanish, let alone Catalan). It allows unlimited travel on the metro, on busses (except night busses), on trams, AND on the overground trains between the airport and the city.

2: There are numerous ways to get from the El Prat airport to the Leonardo Hotel. We weighed up the options and chose to get the Renfe overground train to Sants Estacio (19 minutes), then the Green L3 metro line from Sants Escatio to Liceu (approx. 6 minutes). It’s really easy – the Renfe station is reached via footbridge from the airport Terminal 2 building, and the metro line is accessed from within the Sants Estacio overground station. And if you have an Hola card then IT’S TOTALLY FREE!!! Be aware though that for no apparent reason other than to confuse tourists the “Sants Estacio” station is also called “Barcelona Sants”, so don’t let that perturb you.

3: Beware the Passeig de Gracia metro station! Although many lines seem to conveniently intersect here, it is in fact TWO stations which connect by underground tunnel, which takes 8 to 10 minutes to walk through. So if (for example) you want to go from the Leonardo Hotel to Sagrada Familia (which is probably on your list of things to see) the metro map tells you to get the green L3 line from Liceu to Passeig de Gracia, then join the purple L2 line to Sagrada Familia. Sounds easy! However, as the L3 stops at the station halfway up the Passeig de Gracia, and the L2 train stops at the southern end of Passeig de Gracia you will need to factor that 10-minute walk in, which could be crucial of you have a timed ticket for the Sagrada Familia (order your ticket online beforehand by the way – it saved us a two hour wait in the queue).

Knowing about this gotcha we cleverly jumped off the L3 at Catalunya (one stop north from Liceu) then walked across Placa de Catalunya for about four minutes to the L2 station at the southern end of Passeig de Gracia. We later discovered that we hadn’t been quite clever enough – if you go two stops SOUTH on L3 from Liceu to Paral-lel you can literally walk through a gap in the wall on the platform and jump onto an L2 train to Sagrada Familia. (That tip is your reward for reading this far.)

4: Use TripAdvisor to find places to eat. There are hundreds of restaurants, and they are impossible to distinguish from one another when you’re trapesing around the streets in a starved state of mind, but still compos-mentis enough to know that (a) you are in Spain so really should enjoy some of the local culinary delights rather than going to McDonalds, and (b) you only have a finite amount of money to last your whole holiday, so can’t possibly justify paying that much for a plateful of rice with miscellaneous bits of shellfish in it.

We used a restaurant called Alex’s just off La Ramblas on evening 1. The staff were friendly and the food was OK, and we were given a free glass of Cava and peach schnapps at the end of the meal, BUT my wife’s glass of sangria was 8.50 Euros. Ouch!

On evening 2 we used a TripAdvisor recommended restaurant called El Rincon. Excellent food, portions too big to finish, and a free BOTTLE of Limoncello left at table at end of meal. Quite amazing. (Don’t they know the dangers of leaving alcohol with Brits???) Price guide: Glass of sangria was 6.50 Euros AND we got 50% off the food by booking in advance through TripAdvisor.

On evening 3 we used another TripAdvisor recommendation called Palosanto. This was a much more “authentic” experience – well-cooked food in a rough-and-ready environment (we were shown to a rickety old drop-leaf formica-topped table – no niceties for the tourists here). Staff spoke enough English and were very friendly, but without the TripAdvisor reviews we wouldn’t have dared set foot in the place. Price guide: Glass of sangria was 4.50 Euros. Much better!

All of the above are in easy walking (/staggering) distance of the Leonardo Hotel. We enjoyed them all but would definitely rate El Rincon above the others.

Hope that helps – have a happy holiday :)

Forn Boix bakery around the corner is excellent. Turn left out of the hotel, turn right at the junction by the bar, it's on your left hand side just past the church square. less than 5 mins walk. or cut through to the market for food on the go.
