As the title suggests this is the third year in a row Dolly Doubtfire (formerly known as Ballin Betty) and I have been to this hotel. All three times we stayed in what is called a Superior Room, which is of a comfortable size, but not as luxurious as the name suggests. Certainly not too small though, and very nice. Cleaners very good, and room was clean and made up to a very high standard every day.
Staff were welcoming and helpful as usual. However we were slightly disappointed that we never got the complimentary bottle of wine this year. There were crisps, peanuts, water and two apples. Grateful of the bottle of water every day.
Also they were very helpful in providing us with a kettle as we didn't want to use the espresso machine.
Probably due to the heat and age of the building, there was a permanent smell of rancid drains in the lavatory. Keeping the lavvy door shut stopped the room smelling though. Also the sink did not drain properly.
The air con worked good this year hooray!
It is a non-smoking hotel but you are allowed to smoke on rooftop bar and balcony outside room.
The room and balcony were great. However we were on first floor, so ear plugs essential at bed time. This is due to traffic noise (scooters, taxis, micro-scooters and skateboards!) and shouting from the bar just up from the hotel. This is all not too bad if you're near the top of the hotel, as we were in the previous two years.
Going back to the rooftop bar. Great place to relax. Apart from once or twice there were some foul-mouthed loud youths near the pool.
Bar prices on the rooftop were as usual extortionate. I wouldn't blame anybody from taking up a cerry oot (Scottish for off licence supplies).
We ate out all the time, but breakfast restaurant looked very nice, and restaurant manager was very friendly and helpful whenever we spoke to him.
There are a fine selection of bakeries just round the corner from hotel before you get to Las Ramblas. Also near the bakeries is a nice wee cafe in a square. It serves nice coffee, light snacks and ealy morning beers (cheers!). I think it's called Americano.
Also in this square there is free street entertainment to be had, watching bickering alcoholics and various eccentrics.
Also, if you cannot be bothered venturing too far for your evening meal, there are a fine selection of takeaways just down from the Americano. We liked The Istanbul which did a very good chicken kebab and Kofti with rice. Also in this area was a very nice Italian style takeaway which did nice pizza slices and first class lasagne and fresh focaccia bread.
Also worth mentioning is, although the Ramblas can be an expensive tourist trap of variable quality there is a nice sit-in restaurant near the Catalonia Square end of the Ramblas called Moka. It's clean and modern, quite reasonably priced, with good food and friendly service.
All in all, very good stay, and thanks again to all the staff.
Hope to be back again one day.
