The rooms overlooking the street are basic with small balcony. However we found it impossible to sleep from the noise of locals and tourist revellers which lasts into the early hours. We asked for a quieter room at the back which although airless it allowed for sleep as it was a lot quieter.
Rooms are spotlessly clean as are the shared bathrooms. Front desk staff speak English and are very helpful, they pointed us in the direction of some good value bars and cafes. We really like La Plata a few minutes walk away. It serves the freshest sardines and salads, just two or three selections each day but delicious and reasonably priced. The bar is always packed with locals, which is a good sign. The house wine is excellent and reasonably priced, served from giant barrels above the bar.
Pension Segre is situated in the Gotic district, a 10 minute walk from the Plaza Catalan where the airport buses stop. It's also next to La Ramblas which we felt to be over rated. We prefered the area around the hotel such as Born which has a lot of character and Barceloneta which is close to the beach and has a character all of it's own and a community of families who have lived here for centuries, it was home to the fishing community. The huge buildings with balconies remind you of Havana.
The Segre is very close to the beach which tends to be packed during the summer season. There is a very nice bar on the beach which offers shelter from the searing sun, the salads are delicious and reasonably prices, Sangria and local beers are also served.
Pension Segre does not offer breakfast but there is a coffee machine next to reception. We loved a little cafe -La Merce in Plaza Merce next to the cathedral. We would have breakfast there. they have a special offer of toasted bacon and salad sandwich with cafe con leche for a bargain Euros 3.50. The cakes and sandwiches are delicious at this award winning cafe which is open from 7am each morning.
We were surprised at what a great value destination Barcelona is. When you reads about it you tend to associate it as being as expensive as Rome or Paris, but no, on the contrary. You can find a decent bottle of good wine for just Euros 2 and a good local beer for less than £1.
Locals are friendly and will be happy to chat with you and tell you how they are Catalonians, they are proud of their heritage. It's a great city to walk around, you do not need to take transport. Much of it is pedestrianized. There is a metro just five mins. from the hotel where you can get a connection to the airport, it's faster than the bus and easy to access. Ask at reception for directions. Purchase a transport card which allows you to use bus tram metro and train. Great value and convenient.
The only hazard was the huge amount of middle aged men in ponytails whizzing by on skateboards or those silly scooters. It seems due to the economic crisis an awful lot of middle aged men have a lot of leisure time these days and spend much of that time annoying people as they zoom past on roller skates and skateboards. The authorities need to tackle this problem as these guys are a pest.
We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful city, and would highly recommend a visit.
I found the hotel VERY clean and actually very quiet and although its an older hotel, it has a lot of character with marble floors, giant mirrors but simple comfortable furnishings and old paintings from the 70s on the walls which I liked. A few minutes from Las Ramblas but very quiet area and 2 streets from the harbour too! It was very hot so we had two floor fans that were provided going the whole time. Nice old elevator too but easy access with steps. I never heard any other people in the hotel so it seemed well insulated to me.
Also had the best wifi connection I’ve experienced at a hotel in years, very fast and strong signal in your room which was very handy and not that easy to find in Spain.
We had an ensuite double which was perfect. I also checked out the sharing bathrooms nearby and they were super clean and centrally located in the hallways.
Ten minutes walk from two metro stations so easy to get around town! Hop on bus nearby too.
The only problem is the angry cleaning lady. She was very upset when we arrived 30 minutes before check in time and scolded us loudly in Spanish to go away and come back later. She seemed to be forever mopping the halls and muttering to herself psychotically. At first it was funny, but she was downright scary!! The second morning, she was banging on the door demanding to clean but we were still in bed, as it’s a very late night city, so I told her to come back on Sunday! She was nicer the third day and I was just about to forgive her, as I also saw her working the front desk night shift at 2am –but check out morning, she was a raging maniac again banging on the door several times way before 11am, and we stumbled out of the room with our bags and half dressed just to keep her quiet! Then we heard her cursing probably as we didn’t leave a tip! I’d love to stay there again but she’d have to have retired for me to return to this fabulously located budget hotel. Stay there if you get up early and won’t run into her!! Maybe she owns the place?!
PS. Barcelona seemed very safe with tons of police patrolling on every street but we did see one attempted robbery of a phone so keep your things hidden!

The main issue with this hotel is the treatment from the staff. I've never come across to worse service and attitude than this. The cleaner shout at us for no reason and the reception person told me to go away when i mentioned that the room didn't have a fan as indicated when i booked it. So i had to stay 4 nights in a room without a fan barely able to get sleep due to the heat. Not to mention that the bed mattress was as hard as a rock.
When booking the room it was mentioning and also showing that there is a ceiling fan. When arriving you are asked to pay in cash for the whole period of stay before you see the room, so you can't get refund.
Moreover the room was barely cleaned if at all while i was away. Overall its the worst place i've ever rented and fully regret it.
Currently staying at a 1 star hotel in Barcelona, after my 4 day visit to the 2 star Pension Segre. And I can tell there's a large difference between the two: the one star hotel is the same price, much cleaner, no provided ash trays in a "nonsmoking" room, personal bathroom and shower, the opening to the balcony actually closes properly and does not let drafts and noise in, and staff is much more friendly and helpful. Also they charged me a 2 euros "city tax" for the same length stay, rather than the "tourist fee" of 7 euros.
In the below review the manager replied with a snappy "stay at a 5 star hotel to get the experience you wished for" (Which by the way shows the friendliness of the place). I'd like to inform that my experience at a 1 star hotel is miles better than Pension Segre, no 5 star needed.
The location was the only good thing about this place, but you can find the same or a better deal elsewhere in Barcelona, I guarantee it.
At 50 years of age, it feels a little like slumming ot a little, but that's because I'm 50 now, and have forgotten how often I used to stay in places like this, and did so very happily.
I have lived in Barcelona over 20 years ago, so although I don't go back often, it's always lovely to come back to such a special city. I brought my 18 year old son, who has been before, and we chose this place primarily due to location, literally 500 yards from Las Ramblas at the Columbus end, near the Port Vell marina.
It's in the Gothic Quarter, full of beautiful old buildings, near great cafes, patisseries and restaurants, at great prices because they are off the main street. It's also quiet, so you don't get the scooters balsting up and down all through the night.
It's a classic Spanish pension, with a desk that is manned 24 hours a day if you do want to go out well into the night. The room was clean, with a great shower in the en-suite bathroom.
You need to go to a farmacia to get your shower gel, there is not breakfast, but there are several great cafes for that. You get a small balcony, and you can open the doors and get fresh, warm Catalan ari, as it's always warm. So no air conditioning, but fresh air is much better anyway.
I loved this place. It's old fashioned, and I hope it stays that way, and all for €50 per night. The wifi works brilliantly as well.
We will be going back.
"No A/C. They do have fans available. Spend the money on a the nicer rooms - its worth it."Read full review
