Neighbourhood: Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighbourhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighbourhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.

A highly memorable, poignant and educational experience
Definitely the most memorable and poignant part of our trip to NYC. Our guide was the photographer, Gary Suson, which gave a unique insight into the 9/11 tragedy and subsequent aftermath. The tour was pitched perfectly for our children aged 10 & 12 with a very insightful and succinct audio tour. To be able to hold actual ground zero artefacts was both a unique and thought provoking experience.

Hard to describe how poignant this was. It was deep and meaningful and touched my entire family- with kids ranging from 11-20 years old. The pictures are excellent and the audio your adds so much to the powerful experience.

You can’t see all the pictures and hear all the stories without getting emotional. We felt all the heartbreak and have a lot of respect for all the people involved 9-11 aftermath. Heroes! We also went to the museum but the workshop is an intimate museum and much more personal. A Must-visit.

This is an incredible collection of photographs and artifacts from the Ground Zero recovery, accompanied by thoughtful and thought-provoking commentary. It is a truly emotional experience: I was at something of a loss for words when I had the privilege of meeting Gary Suson, the photographer and curator; My wife was moved to tears. The workshop offers a different experience to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, and the two really do complement each other. This collection offers a much deeper look into the recovery effort, and a truly moving account of many of the FDNY firefighters involved in both the immediate response and the harrowing work in the following months. The stories of those who lost family, friends, and colleagues is treated with the greatest dignity. I cannot recommend this museum and workshop highly enough.

Incredible display of history. Very moving to view these photographs and artifacts, while listening to stories about them. There is so much to see I could, and probably will go back.

This is our second visit to the 9/11 Museum Workshop Tour. I would highly recommend it. It is such a moving and emotional experience. It is a self guided tour as you listen to the description of the photos and artifacts from 9/11 and the ground zero recovery effort. You hear personal stories and learn of the heroic efforts made by the men and women working at the site. It was once again my number one thing I wanted to do while visiting NYC.

Brilliant museum, very interesting with a focus on the aftermath of 9/11. Very sensitively handled for a very emotional subject. You get to go around at your own pace with an audio guide so you can relisten to anything you may have missed, and sit and absorb the impact of the day and the aftermath. Very glad I went, Thank you Gary and team.

It's so difficult to describe how utterly amazing our visit was 'Wow!' just doesn't seem enough!
I planned a surprise trip to NYC for my Firefighter husband John, who retires this year after nearly 30 years of service in the UK. I desperately wanted to take him here, but it didn't seem likely due to the seasonal times. That was until my savior intervened.
Gary allowed us to visit on a closed day and I will be forever grateful, as this absolutely made our trip. His wealth of first-hand knowledge and experience about the disaster is unsurmountable, and his years of dedication in creating and maintaining the museum are truly an inspiration.
As for the museum itself.. your senses go into overdrive as you watch, listen, and feel genuine artifacts, radio messages, and photos taken within hours of the disaster.
Although it was well over twenty years ago, here, you feel like it's yesterday; such is the emotion it generates.
It is utterly mind-blowing to hold a piece of a blown-out window, a cross that was handmade for bereaved families from metalwork that was once the building's structure, and even a piece of fuselage from one of the planes... I could go on!
We have treasured memories, and the visit is something that neither of us will ever, ever forget.
Make this a priority if you're visiting New York... I promise you won't be disappointed.
Thank you, Gary, for the enormous dedication and devotion that you have in keeping these memories alive.
