Brendan was an outspoken advocate for equality and human rights, and enjoyed many hobbies including his passion for music: collecting vinyl, listening to music, and DJing for NYU's student-run radio station (WNYU 89.1FM) as both an NYU student and alumnus. Professor Yorke E. Rhodes (WSUC ʼ85) died peacefully early Monday morning 10/10/22 at age 86 in Sussex, NJ. He is survived by his wife Mechthilde, his sons Yorke Rhodes III of NYC, Chris Rhodes of San Diego, Matthias Raabe of West Orange NJ, and Timothy Rhodes of South Orange, NJ. He joined the chemistry department of NYU in 1965 and developed research areas in SO2 solvent chemistry, electrocyclic reactions, small ring chemistry, and carbocations, especially neighboring group cyclopropane-assisted cation rearrangements. Professor Rhodes was co-founder and Director of the Dual Degree Program in Science & engineering at New York Univ and Stevens Institute of Technology. (Fall 2022)

Kenneth H. Brief (WSC ʼ61)—“Ken,” “Mr. Brief,” “Professor Brief,” “Honey,” “Grandpa Kenny” or “Gpa,” depending on whom you ask—was born in Newark, New Jersey. A lifetime student of history, Ken was born on June 12, 1939, just 81 days before the start of World War II. Read his full obituary here(Fall 2023)

Dr. Isabel Whitehill-Grayson (WSC ʼ54, GSAS ʼ57, DEN ʼ61), died on October 29, 2023, at the age of 89. This triple Violet was a prominent orthodontist from Brooklyn, NY, and was an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Orthodontics at NYU for many years, including co-director of the Graduate Program for Foreign Dentists. (Fall 2023)

Rhoda Cohen Scherer Cohen (WSC ʼ48, STEINHARDT ʼ50) has passed away at age 95. She was proud to be an NYU alum and working Registered Occupational Therapist for over 55 years. She is survived by three children and four grandchildren and her ex-husband, Monroe Scherer, another NYU alum. (Spring 2023)

Hugh Norbert Boroson (WSC ʼ47, GSM ʼ51) (Fall 2023)

Prof. Norman H. Zide (ARTS ʼ47) attended Music & Art High School (now Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts) and graduated at 15. He continued to NYU, Yale, Columbia & Penn; US Army Korean War veteran who specialized in Indian tribal languages. Professor & department chair in South Asia at the University of Chicago.  Worked with the American Institute of Indian Studies & The Munda Language Project. Fulbright Scholar & Ford Foundation grant recipient. Classically-trained pianist who loved opera & prolific writer of short prose. Travelled far, saw much & made his own way.  Survived by his sons, daughter-in-law, nieces, nephew, numerous cousins, students & friends. Loved & will be missed. (Fall 2023)

Judith Ann Klein, née Sicklick (DEN ʼ80) died Saturday, March 25th, 2023, at age 71. She is survived by her sister Janet, her brothers John and James, her sister-in-law Faith, her niece Kammie, her aunt June, and her childhood friend Roxann. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth. (Spring 2023)

Ronald Siegel (DEN ʼ77) died in the comfort of his home early Friday morning. He will always be remembered as a fun, creative man who loved nothing more than playing with his grandchildren. (Spring 2023)

Robert Gold (DEN ʼ70) died peacefully on February 28 in Ryegate, VT. Generous with his time, his spirit, and his insight, Robert’s unique perspectives were a gift to all who knew him. He is survived by his former wife Marlene, son David, brother Dennis, and granddaughter Arabella. (Spring 2023)

Joseph Steiner (DEN ʼ69) left this physical world on March 21, 2023. He is survived by his daughters, Michelle Steiner and Shara Steiner and four granddaughters who loved him quite dearly. (Spring 2023)

Dr. Joaquin M Fiol (DEN ʼ65) was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed member of the community. Joaquin left this world on May 30, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and family. (Summer 2023)

Martin J. Lapidus (DEN ʼ64) died on April 16, 2023. A lovingly devoted man of great wit, technological knowledge, gentle care of dental patients and esteemed colleague and professor at NYU, Martin will be profoundly missed by his loving wife Pamela Ampel-Lapidus, daughter Jessica Collins and her husband Nate, sister Barbara Gortikov, brother David Lapidus and the many nieces and nephews he so enjoyed bringing laughter to. Bentley Atwood Howe Merrick, D.M.D. (DEN ʼ93) beloved father, husband, son, brother, friend, and dentist, died on July 2 in Burlington, VT. He was 61-years-old. Ben was a 1983 graduate of Middlebury College, a 1988 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and a 1993 graduate of the New York University College of Dentistry Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics. Ben’s South Burlington, VT, practice – Vermont Prosthodontics – grew over the years to help many. Additionally, he became a Clinical Instructor at the University of Vermont Medical Center General Dental Practice Residency in 1997. He found tremendous meaning in working with the next generation of dentists. (Summer 2022)

Dr. Mattis Fern (DEN ʼ59) died on July 7, 2022. He practiced dentistry in Manhattan and Roslyn, New York. He was a clinical professor of operative dentistry from 1959-1965. He was a lifetime member of ADA , member of Alpha Omega, and member of the First District Dental Society. He lectured in Hebrew at Tel Aviv University on full mouth rehabilitation as well as at local dental societies. He was an annual participant in the Greater New York Dental Meeting. (Summer 2022)

Walter Strubel (DEN ʼ56) died recently. He was married to his wife Norma for 70 years. He adored his three children, seven grandchildren, and beautiful great granddaughterwith all his heart. He was so loved, respected and will be greatly missed by many. (Spring 2023)

Dr. Alan Simonson (DEN ʼ54) died on March 26, 2023. After graduating from New York University College of Dentistry, he practiced dentistry in Woodmere for nearly four decades. He is survived by his loving family. (Spring 2023)

Dr. Stanley Noel Schwartz (DEN ʼ53) died on June 27, 2023. Stanley was a graduate of Adelphi College and New York University School of Dentistry and was dedicated to the practice of Dentistry until the age of 78. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years Blanche, his daughters Lyssa (Daniel) and Lori (Patrick), and his four grandchildren. (Summer 2023)

Michael Abraham (LS ʼ17, GAL ʼ17) died on February 5, 2023, with his legacy living on through his writing, family and friends. He inspired those around him with his kindness and love. (Winter 2023)

Tonya Ingram (LS ʼ11, GAL ʼ13) was a native Cincinnati poet who has been honored at the Getty Museum, Madison Square Garden, San Francisco Opera House, Nuyorican Poets Café, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Lexus Verses and the Flow variety show, and The Price is Right. She wrote How to Survive Today, a collection of poems, prompts, and affirmations for those of us still finding our way. (Spring 2023)

Amelia Stanley (GAL ʼ07) died peacefully on April 2, 2024, following a fierce four-year fight with metastatic breast cancer. Only 39 years old, Amelia most recently was the senior director of Development for Sixth & I in Washington, DC. She was passionate about musical theater, education, community outreach, and Washington sports. She leaves her father and mother, Gary and Elizabeth Stanley; her beloved sister, Lucy Stanley; aunts, uncles, and cousins; friends, colleagues, and many professional acquaintances spanning the globe. Her ebullient spirit and joie de vivre will continue to be a blessing to all who knew and loved her. She shined brightly and will always be a beacon of love for her many admirers and loved ones. Carol B Gartner, PhD (GSAS ʼ70), beloved wife, mother and grandmother, former Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Purdue University Calumet, passed away on November 5, 2023 at Silverado Memory Care Center in Escondido, CA. Carol was deeply admired for her intelligence, leadership abilities, smile, warmth and kindness. (Fall 2023)

Dr. Philip KY Young (GSAS ʼ71) born in Honolulu, Hawaii, 1945, passed away on September 22, 2023. After graduating from NYU with his doctorate in economics, Philip went on to become a professor at the Lubin School of Business at Pace University, a global consultant to many Fortune 500 firms, and the author of multiple books on finance, including The Portable MBA(Fall 2023)

Beverly Moss Spatt (WAG ʼ70, GSAS ʼ76), a fierce defender of New York City’s aesthetic and cultural heritage who battled real estate and political interests to protect distinguished buildings and historic districts as chairwoman of the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission in the 1970s, died on Friday, July 14, 2023 in Brooklyn. Dr. Patricia A. Farrell (GSAS ʼ78, STEINHARDT ʼ90) has joined the non-profit board of directors of Clinics4Life, offering maternal health services in underserved countries beginning in the Philippines, then India and Africa and has published a collection of flash fiction stories Unexpected Short Tales of Surprise on Amazon. Dr. Farrell writes daily on Medium.com where she has been named a top healthcare writer.. (Summer 2023)

Lawrence Slattery (LAW ’82) passed away on February 17, 2022. He was loved and admired by his extended family, friends, classmates, and colleagues for his good nature, constant optimism, unparalleled intellect, genuine warmth, unaffected charm, biting humor, and his ability to tell a really good story. In his own words, he "had lived poetry".

J. H. "Michael" Payne (LAW ʼ78) is sad to share that he passed away in Washington, DC in July (2023). (Fall 2023)

John M. Callagy (LAW ’69) was a graduate of Georgetown University and the New York University School of Law. He was a preeminent trial lawyer and trusted counsellor to leading companies and institutions including JPMorgan Chase, Ralph Lauren, Foot Locker, and the Archdiocese of New York, among countless others. He leaves behind the rich legacy of a thriving firm and countless lawyers who admired him, learned from him, and follow his example of professionalism, devotion to clients, and charitable work. 

John J. McGraw (LAW ’65) passed away on July 16, 2023. He enjoyed a long career in an in-house and general counsel role with Ciba-Geigy and Ciba Specialty Chemicals. He was a constant optimist who loved opera, had a zest for travel, never tired of learning, and enjoyed engaging on topics of history, politics, and the news of day. He loved and cherished his family and is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie, 4 children, and 5 grandchildren. (Summer 2023)

Donald King (LAW ’63) passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2022. Don earned several advanced law degrees and was a law professor at St. Louis University for more than 25 years. During his career he had written 12 legal textbooks, published over 100 law journal articles, and he was the founder of the International Academy of Commercial and Consumer Law. Don loved to travel and was able to make 4 different trips around the world, accomplishing 6 Continents in 40 days which included several extensive experiences and many cutting-edge opportunities. Don was recognized around the world as an expert in commercial and consumer law.

Claudine Siegel (LAW ’59) of Longboat Key, Florida died on February 13, 2020. She was 84- years-old. Claudine was an attorney who dedicated her legal career to representing indigent clients as the statewide head of the Family Unit for Connecticut Legal Services. She leaves behind her husband Allen, with whom she enjoyed a loving 62-year marriage, children Jonathan Siegel and Tamra Lichtman, daughter-in-law Michelle Girvan, son-in-law Scott Lichtman, grandchildren Eli and Kayla Lichtman and Zara Siegel, and sister and brother-in-law Nadine and Manny Schultz. Claudine Siegel was born May 23, 1935 to Abraham and Irene Friedman in Antwerp, Belgium. Claudine and her family escaped the Holocaust, leaving the day the advancing German army reached Belgium, and ultimately resettling in Manhattan.

Michael Chavez Reilly (STEINHARDT ʼ14) died on November 2, 2023, at the age of 56. Diagnosed with ALS in August 2019, Michael bore his disease with grace and a determination to live the remainder of his life as fully as possible. Robert Sayre Lewis (STERN ʼ40) was the star of NYU’s basketball team in the late 1930s and the subject of a play produced by Seattle Repertory Theatre in 2019. He died at 104-years-old on July 2, 2022. Bob was a key player in the storied NYU Violets’ 18-1 record in the 1938-39 season and was captain of the team the following year. He was inducted into the NYU Athletic Hall of Fame. (Summer 2022)

Donald Eisele (TANDON ʼ52) died on October 7, 2023. He worked his way up from being a brakeman for the New York Central Lines to being a consultant on passenger rail transit projects globally. He will be greatly missed. (Fall 2023)

Mark Traub (TSOA ʼ80) died at 64 on Dec. 6 2022 from leukemia after an illustrious career at NBC as senior stage manager and back-up director for TODAY for 35 years.  He credited NYU and his teachers and friendships there with his success. His laughter, professionalism, and kindness will be truly missed. (Winter 2022)

Morton L. Downey III (WAG ’69), a legendary leader in transportation who served as Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer of the MTA, and was the longest serving Deputy Secretary of the US DOT, has died. His life and work redefined processes to address equity and accountability, and are an inspiration for public service. (Winter 2024)
