Read below for a sampling of awards and honors earned by NYU faculty in 2023-2024.


Three NYU faculty members have been awarded 2024 Guggenheim Fellowships. NYU’s Julia Wolfe, Shadi Harouni, Alexander Nagel, and 185 other scholars and artists have been selected from more than 3,000 applicants by John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation for this year’s awards. The 2024 Fellows represent 52 scholarly disciplines and artistic fields and range in age from 28 to 89.

  • Shadi Harouni is an assistant professor and head of photography and video in the Department of Art and Art Professions at NYU's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
  • Alexander Nagel, the Craig Hugh Smyth Professor of Fine Arts at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts, has wide-ranging research interests, mostly concerned with how art allows humans to think through time and find orientation in the world. 
  • Julia Wolfe is an internationally renowned composer who is professor of Music Composition and artistic director of Music Composition in the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions at NYU Steinhardt.

Deborah Willis, University Professor; chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging (TSOA); and director, Center for Black Visual Culture/Institute for African American Affairs, has been nominated to be a Member on the National Council on the Humanities by President Joe Biden

Three NYU faculty members were elected to the National Academy of Sciences:

  • Moses Chao, professor of cell biology, psychiatry, and neuroscience and physiology and part of Grossman School of Medicine’s Institute of Biomolecular Medicine
  • Glennys Farrar, Collegiate Professor of Physics and Julius Silver, Rosalind S. Silver and Enid Silver Winslow Professor at New York University
  • Subhash Khot, Professor of Computer Science

Congresswoman Grace Meng was named Distinguished Visiting Urbanist at NYU Wagner for Fall 2023. During her time collaborating with students and faculty, the highly dynamic, skilled, and accomplished representative is teaching a course titled "Topics in Urban Studies.”

Four faculty members have been named fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences:

  • Marisa Carrasco, Julius Silver Professor of Psychology and Neural Science and Collegiate Professor
  • Paula England, dean of social science and a professor of social researchand public policy at NYU Abu Dhabi, and Julius Silver Professor of Sociology
  • Pamela Newkirk, professor of journalism
  • Richard Schechner, University Professor Emeritus

Roland Bauerschmidt, professor of mathematics, has been awarded the Breakthrough Prize New Horizons in Mathematics Prize
