  • 🌟 Texas night skies just got darker! 🌌 Congratulations to our partners at Shield Ranch on being named the first Urban Night Sky Place in Texas! This designation honors their dedication to sustainable land management in the Austin area, supporting wildlife both day and night. “As advocates for wildlife conservation, we understand the importance of reducing outdoor lighting to reduce harmful impacts to wildlife including migrating birds, as well as moths and other insects that are active at night,” says Robert Ayres, co-owner of Shield Ranch. 🌠 Read more about this stellar achievement: https://lnkd.in/gsp3pUse

  • ICYMI: Listen to this recording of Longleaf, a multimedia event that brings music and nature together! Special thanks to Dr. Ben Morris, Loop38, and TNC's East Texas Forest Preserves Manager Shawn Benedict for collaborating to tell the story of the iconic longleaf pine tree.

    Composer, Music Educator, Jazz Pianist

I’m thrilled to share the recording of Longleaf, a multimedia collaboration with Loop38. Longleaf traces the history of the longleaf pine tree and the timber industry in East Texas through music, soundscapes, video, and historical photographs. The piece reflects on the relationship of people and environment, highlighting fascinating fire-adapted longleaf landscapes which thrive on frequent burns, both natural and manmade. I’m proud of the piece and grateful for the hard work of the musicians and recording team, the insight and help of Shawn Benedict and The Nature Conservancy in Texas, and funding support from Mid-America Arts Alliance, Texas Commission on the Arts, and Stephen F. Austin State University. You can catch the video here (it's long, so feel free to check out the individual chapters/movements): https://lnkd.in/gagPGrm7 And on my website: https://lnkd.in/gdGEAYcd Below is a video excerpt of the third movement, which gets up close and personal with sounds and sights of a longleaf burn, weaving together music, ambisonic fire soundscapes, and visuals 🔥🌲. • Once upon a time, Boy Scouts flocked to the El Rancho Cima Camp in the Texas Hill Country for outdoor fun along the Blanco River. Thanks to TNC, Hays County, and local voters, more than 530 acres of the historic camp will soon breathe new life as a public park and preserve for all to enjoy. 🏕 Read more about this campfire tale of conservation and community: https://nature.ly/3WsRwoA
