  • Healthy giant kelp forests were once common features along the Victorian coastline. After decades of decline, only a few remnant patches remain, including this beautiful stand off the Otway Coast. Working with our partners, TNC is on a mission to develop a recovery strategy for giant kelp forests in Victoria. As a first step, we’ll be diving into the historical ecology of these fascinating underwater forests. Stay tuned for more… Magnificent footage: Jarrod Boord / Streamline Media

  • We are always in the mood for good news! Recently, independent monitoring was completed at Noosa's Huon Mundy reefs confirming that the reefs continue to improve consistently, thriving faster than expected. These early monitoring results are really promising. Beyond the report, TNC staff and local river guardians report sightings of reef loving life such as crabs, nudibranchs, corals, worms and octopus taking up residence on the reefs. Noosa’s Huon Mundy Reefs were established in a partnership between The Nature Conservancy, Noosa Council , @thomas_foundationThe Thomas Foundation, the Queensland Government, the Australian Government’s Reef Builder initiative, the Kabi Kabi Nation and the Noosa community. The Noosa Parks Association (NPA) played a key role in the early development of the oyster reef restoration project concept in the Noosa estuary. Read more: https://nature.ly/3So0xg5

  • At TNC, we have the privilege of sharing some of nature's amazing stories. Since 2013, TNC's Cool Green Science blog has covered the best of conservation science from around the world: innovative solutions to the most pressing conservation problems, field reporting on the latest research, adventures from biologists, opinion and commentary, and plenty of unique and cool creatures. We believe that by telling these powerful stories we can educate, inspire and share how conservation science can help answer some of the most compelling questions out there — questions that have profound implications for the quality of our lives and for all other life on the planet. • We are celebrating a new win for nature and people, with the dedication of The Lakes as one of Queensland's newest national parks. In 2022, TNC, with generous support from the Wyss Foundation and Haley Mellin’s Art into Acres initiative through Re:wild, supported the acquisition for protection of The Lakes by the Queensland Government, adding more than 43,000 hectares of significant conservation value habitat to Queensland’s protected area estate. With the protection of The Lakes, we demonstrate the importance of dedicated government budgets and philanthropic partnerships to reaching Australia’s commitment to protect 30% of our lands and 30% of our oceans before 2030, to tackle the loss of biodiversity. • This NAIDOC week, we celebrate coming together on Korrawinga, the Great Sandy Strait in Queensland. This area of Butchulla Sea Country hosted cultural training recently for TNC with djaa narawi Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation (BNTAC) rangers. Aunty Joy, Tilly and Travis shared two-way learning with TNC's Megan and Craig to start the of journey of walking Country, talking Country and healing Country, together. This new project is part of the The Nature Conservancy’s ambitious goal of bringing shellfish reefs back from the brink of extinction nationally. This project is funded through the Reef Coastal Restoration Program. #reefcoastalrestoration #shellfishreefrestoration #NAIDOC24

  • At TNC, we honour and celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise their continuing cultural connection with the lands and waters on which we live and work as well as their vital role in caring for Country. We celebrate too, all the nominees for 2024 National NAIDOC Week Awards. We are inspired by their stories and their incredible contributions to improve the lives of people in their communities and beyond. There is a huge overlap in caring for country and conservation. Every day, we work with First Nations peoples to think differently about how we achieve mutual and meaningful objectives. We have and will continue to work hard to amplify the voices of our partners and to reinforce the appreciation of cultural knowledge and equity for First Nations peoples in conservation. #NAIDOC2024 #BLAKLOUDPROUD

  • On this World Environment Day, we are grateful for all those that have come before us that have innovated, educated and persisted in advocacy and protection of our breathtaking planet. We are grateful too, to those working now, developing science-led solutions to ensure that our natural environment can continue to thrive. Conservation problems are big and complex, but not without solutions. TNC, our partners and supporters are living, breathing, shellfish - reef - restoring, giant - kelp - planting, blue - carbon - innovating, and ecosystem - conserving examples of this! So, are you in? Will you be a part of #GenerationRestoration? We firmly believe, that with your help, we can find a way. #worldenvironmentday #nature #conservation #GenerationRestoration

  • The Great Southern Reef spans over 8,000 km of coastline across southern Australia, encompassing a diverse range of habitats from shallow rocky reefs to deep sponge gardens. It is a biodiversity hotspot hosting a wide array of species, including many unique to this region. The Giant Kelp forests are an integral part of the Great Southern Reef. Paul Tompkins, our Kelp Restoration Coordinator who is leading the Tasmanian Giant Kelp Restoration project, featured in a great video by We are Explorers - sharing the plight of the Giant Kelp forests and how TNC and other amazing organisations (The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania (IMAS-UTAS), NRM South and the CSIRO) are working collaboratively to reverse the decline and breathe life back into these vital underwater forests. • Every day it is an honour to work with our Indigenous partners across Australia, guided by them on how they want to manage Country to address the dual crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. Outcomes are stronger for nature and for people when Indigenous people lead decisions on how to care for Country. To address our planet’s biggest challenges, we need connection, we need respect, we need partnership. We need #reconciliation, #now more than ever. https://nature.ly/3yQweHW

  • We have been busy over the last few weeks! TNC’s divers have been busy outplanting over 300,000 baby golden kelp grown on 3km of seeded twine and 500kg of gravel. Kelp were outplanted into 0.5 hectare of urchin barrens in Port Phillip Bay to help restore these important marine ecosystems which have experienced dramatic losses over the past few decades. The baby kelp were grown at Deakin University's Marine Science Centre in Queenscliff and this project is a collaboration between TNC, University of Melbourne, Deakin University and Parks Victoria and has been funded by the Victorian Government's Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action. Innovation, collaboration and conservation! #conservation #nature
