  • Meet Cole Christians, our summer intern in the Pocono Mountain Area! ⛰☀ 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (Rising Senior) 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Cole’s journey into conservation began with the rustling of leaves during childhood campouts as an Eagle Scout. Those early experiences ignited a love for the environment. In college, Cole’s interest widened to the vast world of conservation and sustainability. Now, Cole feels a deep obligation to give back to our planet, which has provided so much. 𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐓𝐍𝐂 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧: In his exhilarating first week, Cole wielded a chainsaw—a thrilling initiation into the stewardship team’s work. Chainsaws and power tools are essential for trail upkeep and fire management. Without them, performing crucial fieldwork would be impossible. 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭: Cole is thrilled to be able to utilize his cartography skills in ArcGIS Pro this summer. He is working on mapping out a new trail system at one of the preserves—a perfect blend of outdoor fieldwork and digital creativity. 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐫: Hailing from the flat Midwest, Cole thrives in the Pocono mountains. Spotting new flora, fauna, and geologic wonders during day hikes fuels his spirit. His trusty harmonica, a jar of trail mix, and ample water accompany him on every adventure. 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬: When not harmonica-jamming on his outdoor adventures, you can catch Cole singing choral tunes. Back in Ann Arbor, Cole is part of the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club. Amidst the solitude of the forest, he finds solace in singing. 𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐬𝐲𝐥𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: After spotting one twice in the forests of Pennsylvania, the ethereal luna moth stole Cole’s heart. Cole describes seeing the luna moth as a “truly awesome moment, quite literally”. 📸: Cole Christians #intern #internships #Pennsylvania #Conservation

  • Exciting news for Pennsylvania! 🎉 US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael S. Regan and Gov. Josh Shapiro announced $396 million in grants to boost Pennsylvania's decarbonization efforts. The RISE PA program, strongly supported by The Nature Conservancy, aims to cut #carbon emissions by 5.2 million tons by 2050 through innovative low-carbon industrial materials and technologies. This initiative not only fights #climatechange but also promotes fair labor practices, workforce development, and good-paying jobs. Let's support Pennsylvania's journey to a greener, cleaner future! 📸: Nicholas Tonelli

  • Last week was a significant step for environmental progress in #Pennsylvania. The Nature Conservancy had the honor of participating in a pivotal event featuring key figures such as USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, White House National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi, Congresswoman Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, and Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding. During the event, a member of TNC staff delivered insightful remarks detailing the impact of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funds in Pennsylvania. Additionally, Secretary Vilsack highlighted the historic investment from the #InflationReductionAct. This funding is a game-changer for our agricultural community, as it will bolster support for producers, advance #climate smart agricultural practices, and strengthen the resilience of America’s agricultural sector. We’re excited to be at the forefront of these transformative initiatives, driving positive change for our #environment and #economy. 📸: Michelle Giles/TNC

Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to overturn the Chevron doctrine will present challenges to preserving the many decades of progress we have made in protecting people and the planet. It will have major implications for implementing and enforcing laws related to such issues as air pollution, public lands management and endangered species protection. The decision impacts the ability of federal agencies to take the actions needed to successfully implement laws enacted by Congress. That is concerning, given the deep scientific expertise and practical experience they have in implementing and enforcing these laws, many which relate to complex and ambiguous issues.
