The Nature Conservancy Asia Pacific
Non-profit Organizations
Conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends – in Asia Pacific and around the world.
About us
Asia Pacific is the fastest-growing region in the world. As the region’s economies expand, increased urbanization, consumption and a rising demand for food, water, housing and energy are placing enormous pressure on the region’s unique natural assets. It faces the greatest risks of species extinction, and many of its coastal areas are among the most vulnerable to climate change. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has been in Asia Pacific for over 30 years, starting with our first project in Micronesia and now also covering conservation programs in Australia, China, Hong Kong SAR (China), Indonesia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Singapore and the Pacific Islands. Healthy giant kelp forests were once common features along coastlines worldwide. After decades of decline, only a few remnant patches remain, including this beautiful stand off the southern coast of Australia. At The Nature Conservancy, we are committed to reversing this trend. In collaboration with our partners, we are developing a comprehensive recovery strategy for giant kelp forests in this region. Our first step involves diving into the historical ecology of these fascinating underwater forests to inform our approach. Stay tuned for updates on our progress. 📽️ Magnificent footage: Jarrod Boord / Streamline media

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has partnered with Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) to scale up our oyster reef restoration project. In 2024, TNC will utilize recycled oyster shells collected through our #SaveOurShell program to develop and restore over 4000m² of larger-scale oyster reefs. This initiative aims to enhance the biodiversity of the waters near the Third Runway. 🎥 © Airport Authority Hong Kong #TNC #TNCHK #TheNatureConservancy #OysterReefRestoration #Biodiversity #Sustainability #EnvironmentalImpact #MarineConservation

🌿🌏 Today on World Mangrove Day, we celebrate nature's superheroes! 🌏🌿 Our Indonesia partner, Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN), is doing incredible work in restoring and preserving vital mangrove ecosystems. Mangroves are nature's superheroes, with remarkable benefits for our planet. 🛡️ Guardians of the coast: They protect our coastlines from sea level rise, tsunamis, and hurricanes. 🌍 Carbon champions: Mangroves can store three to five times more carbon than tropical rainforests. 🐠 Marine nurseries: They serve as nursery grounds for fish, prawns, crabs, and other marine life. 🏪 Supermarkets of the sea: Local communities rely on mangroves for a variety of products. Learn more about YKAN’s amazing efforts below. Let’s protect and restore these superheroes of nature for a sustainable future! 🌱💚 #TheNatureConservancy #WorldMangroveDay #MangroveRestoration #Conservation #TNC #YKAN #Biodiversity #CarbonStorage #SustainableFuture 📸 Photo credit: Vabian Adriano/YKAN

🌺 A big thank you to the U.S. and Indonesian governments and our NGO partners for this fantastic outcome for some of the world’s most vital ecosystems.
Today, The Nature Conservancy joined key partners to announce a groundbreaking debt-for-nature swap as part of the United States of America’s Tropical Forest and Coral Reef Conservation Act (TFCCA). We joined the U.S., the Republic of Indonesia, as well as Conservation International, Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara and Yayasan Konservasi Cakrawala Indonesia. The swap and coral reef conservation agreements will reduce Indonesia’s debt to the United States by $35 million over the next nine years and instead direct that money to supporting grants to protect and restore Indonesia’s coral reef ecosystems, including marine protected areas, improving natural resource management, and supporting the development of sustainable livelihoods for communities that rely on these ecosystems. Debt-for-nature swaps bring huge benefits to conservation: they help to ease the increasing debt crisis that is particularly affecting the developing world while addressing the biodiversity and climate crises in countries home to critical ecosystems and supporting local communities. This is a fantastic outcome for some of the world’s most important ecosystems. Our sincere appreciation to the U.S. Government, the Indonesian Government, and our NGO partners. I can’t wait to see how the next nine years progresses. Read more about the deal here: https://lnkd.in/gxSaXTgM

We’re excited to announce The Nature Conservancy's collaboration with the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) in the oyster shell recycling and oyster reef restoration project adjacent to Hong Kong International Airport's third runway. Our efforts are making significant strides in enhancing the marine ecology of the area. Launched in 2021, the recycling initiative has successfully grown its network from 5 to 10 participating restaurants, with a collection increase from 18 tons to 46 tons of oyster shells in just two years. Aiming to collect 50 tons of oyster shells this year, we’re dedicated to constructing and restoring larger oyster reefs to boost the marine ecosystem. The AAHK’s Marine Ecology Enhancement Fund has been instrumental in supporting the project’s growth. We’re excited to include new partners like The Verandah at The Repulse Bay, The Peninsula Hong Kong, and the Royal Yacht Club. This project is not just about marine ecology, it’s also about promoting waste reduction in Hong Kong by recycling discarded oyster shells. #MarineConservation #Sustainability #EcoInnovation #AAHK #NatureConservancy
