Last week, Dave Matura, Ben Thompson and Matthew Thompson (l-r) joined us at Kankakee Sands to harvest chairmaker's rush seed, which we'll soon plant in a 100-acre field being transformed to a wet prairie. Ben needed conservation related service hours for Scouts, Matthew needed service hours for a college scholarship, and Dave is our Seed Harvesting Volunteer. The restored pond behind the group has water year-round, and it is teeming with life—fish, turtles, frogs and dragonflies. It was a beautiful day, and it was a wet day. Our soaked socks and water-filled boots were proof of that. With the help of our volunteers, we filled 4 bags to meet our goal of collecting 3.5 lbs of seed. Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to overturn the Chevron doctrine will present challenges to preserving the many decades of progress we have made in protecting people and the planet. It will have major implications for implementing and enforcing laws related to such issues as air pollution, public lands management and endangered species protection. The decision impacts the ability of federal agencies to take the actions needed to successfully implement laws enacted by Congress. That is concerning, given the deep scientific expertise and practical experience they have in implementing and enforcing these laws, many which relate to complex and ambiguous issues. Here's another article about TNC's new Mining the Sun report. The quickest way for Indiana to gain energy independence is to utilize unused sites—such as abandoned mines, brownfields or dumpsites—to develop solar and wind farms. https://nature.ly/4cwUZaS
