Minnesota DNR’s newest Scientific and Natural Area protects an incredibly unique habitat along Lake Superior! The Icelandite Coastal Fen SNA, located 11 miles up the Superior shore from Grand Marais, is home to one of two known fens along the lake. A fen is a type of wetland fed by groundwater. This rare feature makes this an important natural area to protect! 📸 Minnesota DNR https://nature.ly/3LJEIEh

Happy International Bog Day! (Yesterday) 🐸 It seems like as good a time as any to share out our recently-updated StoryMap from The Nature Conservancy in Minnesota highlighting some really cool work going on in Minnesota peatlands (which include bogs!). Special thanks to all of the partners highlighted here, and to Cassie Mox, Shreya C., Danielle Diver, and everyone else who contributed. (Know of another peatland project that should be featured? Send me a message!) https://arcg.is/0yn9KP

On a warming planet, trees are part of the climate solution. With their enormous capacity to hold carbon for decades, trees form a line of defense against warming temperatures. That’s why The Nature Conservancy in Minnesota has planted 10 MILLION trees in the state since 2005. Each of these trees will help fight climate change while keeping our water clean and providing habitat for wildlife.

We are THRILLED to share the results from our spring tree planting season. Our guest crews planted 2.3 MILLION trees in northern Minnesota! The impact of these efforts will be felt for centuries to come. Each of these trees has the potential to store carbon, provide habitat for birds and other wildlife and help keep water clean for all! https://nature.ly/4dfGnx6

Our chapter’s first electric vehicle is here! Our stewardship staff will use the EUV to learn more about range, charging and potential uses for electric vehicles in field work. This Chevy Bolt will join our fleet that includes hybrid vehicles. We’re excited to take another step toward sustainability!

We’re at Hole in the Mountain Preserve in southwest Minnesota using machetes to cut down musk thistle before the plant starts to seed. It’s an effective (and fun!) way to avoid using chemicals to manage invasive species on our preserves. The pictures below show a before-and-after view of our hard work! 📸Regan Ware

Minnesota has more peatlands than any other lower-48 state. But these powerful, carbon-storing habitats are found all around the world! Explore these rich hotspots of life that cover just 3% of Earth’s surface but store 30% of its land carbon, from Minnesota to Columbia, Angola to Mongolia, and beyond! https://nature.ly/3W35mg3
