Dogs work lots of essential jobs, but this particular role has to be the cutest career yet: a team of Boykin spaniels using their keen noses to help researchers find and study elusive ornate box turtles. 🐾 🐢 Ruger, Skeeter and Yogi are the newest hires on John Rucker’s turtle-finding team, who have been finding and retrieving turtles for scientists at TNC’s Nachusa Grasslands preserve in northern Illinois for the past nine years. Get to know these furry conservation heroes, their turtle-retrieving process and the important research being done by the Wildlife Epidemiology Lab at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the Brookfield Zoo Chicago to protect these declining turtles. https://nature.ly/3ywbrcZ #Nature #Conservation #Midwest #Illinois

Senator Richard Durbin stopped by Latinos Progresando’s Community Center! We, alongside Latinos Progrsesando and The Nature Conservancy in Illinois, had a wonderful afternoon talking about our partnership designed to enhance the health of people and the planet, as well as co-created programs like Explorando la Naturaleza (Exploring Nature), an adult learning program that trains Parent Leaders from Marshall Square how to explore social-emotional learning in nature with youth and families.

One of my favorite articles from this month tells the story of volunteers who hand pollinate a rare and endangered orchid at The Nature Conservancy in Illinois' Nachusa Grasslands. I think the most motivating stories on climate change and nature loss are those that humanize and highlight the people behind the work. Positive change can happen, and it can start as tiny as a speck of pollen at the end of a toothpick. 🔍 https://lnkd.in/ghVcwTiC

Illinois has made great progress in protecting our cherished natural resources, through many different pathways. To build upon this progress, we must continue to invest in critical state programs. The FY25 Illinois state budget cut funding for Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs), which play a key role in on-the-ground soil health and water quality work. Soil and Water Conservation Districts are essential for implementing voluntary conservation practices on working lands, such as those funded through the federal Farm Bill. Illinois' conservation and agriculture community is advocating for state leaders to restore funding for Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Illinois residents can show their support by signing this petition! https://nature.ly/4cadH7w 📸 Harlen Persinger

You've heard of Bigfoot hanging out in the woods... but have you heard of prairie Bigfoot? 👣🌾 What *appears* to be Bigfoot sneaking through the pasture at Nachusa Grasslands is actually TNC land steward and crew member Piper carrying a huge swath of invasive white sweet clover to a weed pile. White sweet clover is just one of the many invasive weeds that are prevalent across the few remaining prairies in Illinois. This particular plant degrades native grasslands by shading out sun-loving plants, reducing habitat diversity. That's why invasive species removal is an essential tool for healthy prairie management. Thanks to Piper and the many others on our Nachusa crew that have been working hard all summer-long to remove these species, we're making big gains in keeping our habitats diverse. If only the real Bigfoot could lend a helping hand... 📹 Bill Kleiman/TNC [Video description: A huge pile of white sweet clover being carried by a person through a grassland that appears to be moving by itself.] #Nature #Midwest #InvasiveSpecies

It's #NationalMothWeek! 🦋 Often overshadowed by butterflies, moths play a crucial role in the health of our ecosystems. Scientists even estimate that there are ten times more moth species than butterfly species in the world! Many moths are also nocturnal, flitting from flower to flower under the cover of darkness. Moths are also an essential food source for a variety of animals, including birds and bats, thereby supporting the intricate web of life. And the presence of moths can be an indicator of a healthy environment, as they are sensitive to changes in the ecological balance. Discover more about how moths and other peculiar pollinators are vital to the health of the Midwest's ecosystems. https://lnkd.in/ekUJaC_m

Last week, Governor Pritzker signed the CCS protections bill into law. 📃 Illinois has now passed one of the most comprehensive CCS bills in the country. It helps ensure alignment with our climate goals, addresses regulatory gaps, and codifies health and safety considerations. Learn more about the bill at https://nature.ly/4dw4R5p.

So excited to work together to transform this space! Grateful to be a part of projects like this that can help better connect youth to nature in the city.
We're counting down the days until the Hammond Courtyard renovation is finished! In a few weeks, this once empty black top will be converted into Marshall Square's latest green space--filled with plants, shading, benches, and other fun staff that will provide safe, green play area for Hammond kids for years to come. We are so grateful to our partners TNC Illinois, NRF, and our Marshall Square Resource Network members for making this a reality
