I was lucky enough to attend the Royal Television Society's 2024 TV Predictions event on Tuesday – and it was brilliant to see a full house of supporters from across the industry. My key takeaways were: 🏈 US TV market is in a worst state than the UK - big tech is stepping in to fill in for production companies with #sporting and #live events popular. 📱 The takeover of media by big #tech will start happening – but it’s a few cycles away. This change began when we were able to watch TV on our mobile phones. 🍿 Our TV this year is going to be like comfort food – we’re going to revert to simple old fashioned entertaining telly. Gladiators reboot anyone? 💪🏻 Big formats need a sense of #scale to cut through. Fewer, bigger, better is here. 📺 Viewing doesn’t simply happen #overnight anymore. Increasingly, we’re seeing a digital first commissioning strategy. 📱 TV marketing is often old fashion – and needs to tap into #social media as a promotion tool for programmes. Social is a #discovery tool many of us are already using regularly. 👶🏻 YouTube one of the biggest TV competitors with 60% of all people in the UK between ages of 4 and 15 watching it on connected TVs regularly according to Barb Audiences. As they grow up, there’s a danger they’re going to be lost by the broadcasters. Congratulations to Julie McKeen and David Amodio for producing a great event.👏🏻 Lovely to see familiar faces too - including John M. and Sunit Kotecha. 👋🏻
Really great insights. Useful info for many of us- thank you!
Thanks Victoria, appreciate the takeaways! 👍
Good points noted, don't how bad UK TV is compared to Australia TV, How come you weren't on the main stage? 😀
