You're negotiating term sheets with startup founders. How do you handle conflicting valuation expectations?
In my experience there are a variety of levers from liquidation preferences, dividends, and participating rights that I can use as an investor to try to give a founder the valuation they are looking for. Ultimately it is a bit of dance to find the right balance between equity dilution and esop as well.

How can you make the performance evaluation process more transparent?
In my experience a culture that allows employees to share their failures openly and thus help other team members will ultimately drive further innovation. Even at the board level I have seen CEOs uncomfortable to share what has not worked last quarter. We typically try to always have a period during a board meeting that addresses areas that did not go as planned and what has been learned. I also encourage management teams to always “ask the board for specific help in each meeting and hold board members accountable for that help.”

How can you make the performance evaluation process more transparent?
The best ceos / managers we have supported through our venture funds have also understood that performance is not linear. Through follow up and guidance performance can be tracked but more importantly the employee will feel supported. This will often enable a breakthrough month or week and managers need to be open to these results. It’s ultimately about empathy.

How can you make the performance evaluation process more transparent?
I agreed, but tracking progress and providing constructive feedback on a bi monthly basis let’s say can be quite challenging for managers. I have found that managers need to truly set aside a day a week to assess performance in the team and have a system in place that allows for progress tracking. One tool that I like involves project management softwares that provide insights into how engaged a team is with a particular manager.
