In a thrilling Euro 2024 quarterfinal, England's goalkeeper Jordan Pickford showcased the power of data-driven decision-making. Armed with a cheat sheet on his water bottle, Pickford's meticulous research helped him save Manuel Akanji's penalty, propelling England to a 5-3 shootout victory against Switzerland. Pickford's strategy wasn't guesswork; his bottle had detailed instructions for each Swiss player. For instance, he saved Akanji's penalty by diving left, as per his notes. Interestingly, he didn't follow his data for Fabian Schar's kick, diving right instead of left, resulting in a goal. However, he was correct on other occasions, diving the right way for two of the four spot kicks he faced. He couldn’t save them but he did his best. In the end, Pickford's preparation and execution secured England's place in the semi-finals. The modelling is done and its looking like th winner is France 🇫🇷 over Portugal 🇵🇹. 3.4% chance for Belgium though, and pulling for a late run into the tournament for the Red Devils! Our CTO ran a Monte Carlo simulation to play out the tournament 1 million times to get these results (linked his post belowe explaining more in depth). Being from Canada though, I am a bit dissapointed he didn't find a way to add in "truculence" to the model (always talked about in hockey).
