Architectural lighting is not just about what you illuminate, it's also about what you obscure. Drawing focus using lighting is an old trick in theatre and is a lesson that can be applied to architectural lighting as well. Meet Zachariah Antonio Castellano, an Architectural Designer with Lique. Zach is originally from San Antonio and graduated in Architecture from the University of Houston. He credits his electrician father for introducing him to the construction industry at a very early age. Spending summers in hot job trailers, he soon realized an office job was way more appealing and chose architecture to stay connected to the construction industry while pursuing his passion to enhance the built environment. Away from work, Zach enjoys taking his red heeler, Odis, for walks. He also enjoys tinkering with computers, video games and watching movies. A fun fact about Zach is that, though he lives in an area where snowfall is rare, he is an excellent snowboarder and could’ve pursued a professional career in it, if not for the lack of altitude and of course, his parents’ blessings. Being a native Texan and knowing a thing or two about the BBQ scene, his favorite local place for brisket is Reese Bros Barbeque. A favorite quote of his is by the famed architect, Michael Graves, who eloquently said, “My favorite project is always the next one.” Zach shares, “I love this quote because I relate to the excitement and enthusiasm, I have for working on everything and anything, knowing each project is a new lesson and a new opportunity to learn and understand the built environment. A new tower in Austin for ISCS

Adding to its growing portfolio of mass timber buildings, Hines opened T3 ATX Eastside in Austin. Sharing some of the triumphs and challenges of this unique project, Cherise Lakeside, FCSI, interviewed Bobby Larson, Senior Associate, DLR Group. The design team decided to expose some the exterior timber. Consequently, the natural greying of the wood over time will help the new building better blend into its surrounding environment. In embracing the local context, Laron’s team selected materials and textures to compliment the exposed timber including leather, blackened steel and brick. “Their natural texture, colors and patterns with slight variation fit with the timber structure,” explains Larson. Another issue with mass timber is negotiating the permitting process for the structural requirements, fire protection, acoustics, etc., particularly when jurisdictions are not so familiar with this building type. “We try and meet with the city early in the project and go over the code justifications to make sure we both understand the code the same way. Then once we get into permitting, we can head off a lot of questions,” he relates. #masstimber #architecture #structuralengineering #officedesign

Hines College of Architecture and Design University of Houston ARCH 5500 titled, HOT TICKET: Strategies for cooling transit stops and adjacencies in Houston's Second Ward. Studio led by Celeste Ponce Drawing by Rachel Gutierrez The projects examine the social and cultural constructs that maintain community life, economic, and mobilization networks through taking a close look at the Second Ward's history and cultural landscape. Studying a section along Harrisburg Boulevard to Manchester’s fence line community, documents a deep and granular understanding of the Second Ward. By examining the community’s fabrication and maintenance through photojournalistic documentation, cartographic and diagrammatic visualizations, interviews, and site visits, the research surveys the topographical sedimentation of Harrisburg.   The studio’s provocation argues that incorporating the complexity of these relation­ships along new transit lines, including transit lines connecting Houston’s East Side to Mexico, is vital to a more hospitable alternative to commercialized development.   Houston Public Media recently published an investigation looking into the impact of extreme heat on METRO riders in Houston.
