C.A.C Industries is a family-owned civil contractor that works on some of New York City's biggest commercial construction jobs. Hired in June, Devon T. works as an office assistant in the Jamaica, Queens location. He says he enjoys the fact that every work day is a mix of routine tasks and new challenges. Asked what skills he brings to the job, Devon says “my professionalism, my organizational skills, and my keen eye for spying something that the team might have missed.” In addition to scanning and other record-keeping tasks, Devon has cleared outdated license plates from the company’s EzPass account and keeps track of equipment recalls and parking tickets, says Anthony Rangel, maintenance facility manager. “Devon has such a good work ethic - it’s amazing,” Rangel says. “He takes a lot of pride in his work and he cares so much.” Cheryl Vawdrey, Job Path Inclusion Advocate, who worked with Sean McAuliffe to develop Devon’s job, along with that for another Job Path participant, says the company was immediately enthusiastic about Job Path’s mission. “When I told them what we did they said they had been thinking about this for a long time. It was serendipity because they had a desire to become a more inclusive environment in that way for a long time, but they didn’t know how to do it.” McAuliffe, an employment specialist, says it’s amazing to see a work culture like the one they found at C.A.C. “The decision to become more inclusive obviously came from the top, but every person there, no matter their role, was so welcoming & supportive from the get-go,” he says. “They’ve an employer that other businesses should strive to emulate.” #belonging #disability #DisabilityInclusion #EmploymentEquity #DiversityEquityInclusion #DevelopmentalDisabilities #autism

I love it when a plan comes together... Case Study: Senior Land Surveyor in Queensland Background: In Queensland, a surveying company specializing in urban and engineering projects faced difficulties in hiring a Senior Surveyor. This challenge was reflective of the broader issue of a shortage of land surveyors in Australia. Challenges Identified: Aging Workforce, Low Awareness and Educational Pathways, Technological Advancements, Stringent Licensing Requirements, Inflated Resumes, Poor Online Job Board Responses, Increased Demand vs. Supply Gap, Unattractive Work Conditions, MACRO Recruitment’s Strategy: Understanding these challenges, MACRO Recruitment developed a multi-faceted strategy: Targeted Outreach: They engaged in targeted outreach to educational institutions to raise awareness about surveying careers. Rigorous Screening Process: MACRO implemented a rigorous screening process to identify inflated resumes and ensure candidates’ qualifications and experiences were genuine. Enhanced Job Postings: Job postings were optimized to be more appealing and clear about the requirements and benefits, to attract suitable candidates. Experienced Recruitment Team: Leveraging their team’s 20+ years of experience in construction recruitment, they identified potential candidates who might not actively be seeking new roles but were fit for the position. Utilizing AI and Database: The use of AI and a national database of over 9,000 resumes helped in efficiently sorting through candidates and matching skills with job requirements. Upskilling Initiatives: MACRO Recruitment partnered with educational institutions to encourage and facilitate upskilling in modern surveying technologies. Flexible Work Arrangements: Understanding the work conditions of surveying, they highlighted flexible work arrangements where possible to make the roles more attractive. Outcome: MACRO Recruitment’s comprehensive approach, addressing the multi-faceted challenges of the land surveyor shortage, not only filled the immediate vacancy but also laid groundwork for attracting new talent into the field and upskilling existing professionals in Queensland.

This is the current state of our US construction industry: *** 500,000 Job openings = Need more talent *** Yet, we have 4,000+ talented construction professionals in our LinkedField Community that are looking for work Why are these people not finding/matching with each other? Need to be in same region/area Skills and hiring manager’s expectations don’t align Low quality of talent pool and… (share your insights in the comments) What is the real problem? At a fundamental level, I believe we need a new, innovative way to solve this labor shortage and that involves augmenting existing on-site, full-time staff with remote, on-demand construction professionals. Did you know that recruiting technical professionals, especially engineers and surveyors, for public sector roles is becoming increasingly challenging? Here at Butte County Public Works, we're feeling this pinch more than ever. For every single applicant we get for positions like engineers and surveyors, we need an astounding 550 people to view the job announcement. This is a stark contrast to our overall rate, where we typically see 1 job applicant for every 70 views. That's almost 8 times more effort for these specialized roles! This gap highlights the unique challenges public sector agencies face in attracting technical talent. The reasons range from a competitive job market to a lack of awareness about the fulfilling opportunities in public service. Engineers and surveyors are crucial to our communities. They design our infrastructure, ensure safety, and help shape the future of communities. Your skills could contribute to meaningful projects that make a real difference in people's lives. We're reaching out to professionals and recent graduates in engineering and surveying – your community needs you! Check out local government job postings, spread the word, and consider joining a team where your work has a lasting impact!

Why 🤔 do people leave their construction jobs? Some reasons we have heard: Conflict with colleagues Toxic work environment Limited flexibility Excessive working hours Monotony or outdated practices Burnout Few promotion opportunities Attractive alternatives Need for relocation Whether you're in a blue-collar or white-collar role, the reasons for leaving a construction job can vary widely. So, I wanted to ask that same question to the wider construction audience through a survey. Take the survey here: https://lnkd.in/gipDTP6N We will publish the results in a future newsletter issue. #flexiblework #remotework #documentcontrol
