"There's never a dull moment in landscape architecture," says Philip Dugdale. In this recent profile in World Landscape Architecture, Philip tells us about becoming smitten with the public realm, designing with his eyes closed, and why he chose landscape architecture over becoming a postman. https://lnkd.in/eKiheWKS

Sasaki's new interdisciplinary research building at Tecnológico de Monterrey is making steady progress! Born of our 2014 Urban Regeneration Plan, the Expedition building will house the Tec's research institutes and external partners, and is on track to be completed at the end of summer 2024. The 220k-sf trapezoidal volume has an engaging base, with publicly accessible ground and second levels, a transparent middle to that follows the form of the building circulation, and an overhanging top that is articulated according to its cardinal orientation to shade occupants and spaces behind it. In this site visit, we see facade glazing installed on most floors, aluminum skin on three sides, and installation of volcanic stone siding and fiber cement on the plinth. https://lnkd.in/eBTt2ZAp #sasakibuilds

How do you support the evolution of three institutions on a single site? On June 26th, the Board of Directors for Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) approved the AHEC Campus Master Plan after 12 months of planning, design, and community and stakeholder engagement. The 125-acre campus in Downtown Denver is home to three institutions: Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and University of Colorado Denver. The master plan lays out a strategic framework for the continued evolution of Auraria into a true campus with a defined sense of place. The campus will support student living and learning, integrate into the city fabric through public realm networks, and streamline partnerships across institutions. "The AHEC master plan presents an amazing opportunity for this urban institutional home to be part of the catalytic change happening on the southwestern side of Downtown Denver. We are excited to support the missions of each of the three partner institutions to provide a high quality educational experience for their students," says Josh Brooks, a principal on the project.

One of the biggest challenges in dealing with the effects of climate change is stormwater management. Sasaki’s University Lakes project used Autodesk’s InfoDrainage program to restore a series of dredged lakes in Baton Rouge, guiding the flow of stormwater and beautifying parkland at the same time. “Sustainability and sustainable stormwater practices are an integral part of every project, every department, every team at Sasaki,” says Sasaki Civil Engineer Mary Sullivan, P.E. “InfoDrainage was used to connect and model all elements—structures, pipes, outlets, and incorporate rain gardens and bioswales, in a larger bioretention area—all in one program.” Read more about Sasaki’s use of cutting-edge stormwater modeling technologies on Autodesk: https://ow.ly/iNAL50SteG3

In the 1990s, the average lifespan of a street tree in the United States was estimated to be only 10 years. One reason for that, says Christopher Ng-Hardy, is a tendency in urban forestry to treat trees as isolated, shade-producing objects. In recent years, landscape architects have developed more sophisticated soil systems and also gained a better understanding of symbiotic plant communities, which improve the viability of street trees. “The next generation of urban forests needs to be complex, biodiverse, natural systems, integrated into our urban communities,” says Hardy. What's better than finding usable space in your building? 🕵️♀️ Turning it into surprising public amenities! Thanks to its robust structure, 10 World Trade offers wide-open spaces unbroken by columns. In this episode of #sasakibuilds, Meredith McCarthy shows us how that structure makes room for a 150-seat public auditorium that opens to the outside, tucked into a building corner.
