In the 1990s, the average lifespan of a street tree in the United States was estimated to be only 10 years. One reason for that, says Christopher Ng-Hardy, is a tendency in urban forestry to treat trees as isolated, shade-producing objects. In recent years, landscape architects have developed more sophisticated soil systems and also gained a better understanding of symbiotic plant communities, which improve the viability of street trees. “The next generation of urban forests needs to be complex, biodiverse, natural systems, integrated into our urban communities,” says Hardy.
