Featured Project: 'More than my skin' by Columbia University GSAPP student: Laurin Moseley History often overlooks stories of empowerment and resilience in favor of narratives of oppression, but 'More Than My Skin' aims to change that. This retreat and memorial in New York serves as a sanctuary for black youth, providing them with a place to reset, learn, and ultimately find empowerment in their own history and identity, ensuring they leave with the tools to navigate the world confidently and proudly. When I mentioned to one young architect that I had worked on this experimental building, he seemed surprised and said he had studied it in his textbooks as a student! https://lnkd.in/gU424XPD Old stories aside, we will be featuring urban planning after 2050 at the end of next month. “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” - Winston Churchill, 1943 The link between intentional design and society is linear – because while architecture shapes our students, it’s the students that shape our future. And campuses worldwide are sparing no detail, specifying materials for both functionality and aesthetics. These elements breathe life into universities, building community and encouraging academic success. Don’t neglect the details. What are the long-term implications of our designs? What are the socio-economic impacts of our work? How can we minimize carbon on the urban scale? How can we bring nature and people closer together? I am so looking forward to speaking about these topics with the Fay Jones School of Architecture + Design at the University of Arkansas on Sept. 25th. Through the lens of Henning Larsen projects and research initiatives, I will share ways of designing with a life-centered approach on an urban scale, from integrating new mobility modes, decarbonizing urban spaces, and enhancing biodiversity to incorporating bio-based materials in the design of resilient urban environments that support the well-being of citizens and nature. https://lnkd.in/ewh9JSbw #lifecenteredurbandesign

Last week, Mary Gillis (Manager, Jones Miami) and Sarah Tarbet (Senior Associate) attended the FEFPA Conference (Florida Education Facilities Planners' Association) in Palm Coast. It was a great opportunity to connect with leaders in education to hear what they are grappling with at their institutions. Some of the takeaways for the conference included: 1) Facilities planners, architects, engineers, and other AEC professionals were very welcoming to us as #FEFPA first timers. 2) We got the sense that both presenters and attendees had an immense pride of place and a commitment to both K-12 and higher education students’ experience and well-being. 3) We discussed emerging concerns among planners including workforce housing for teachers, streamlining facilities’ inventory metrics, and improving processes for space utilization analysis. (and) 4) We had a great time! Of course, @jonesarch always has a great time wherever we go so that is no surprise. #designatyourservice #jonesarch #jonesarchmiami #architecture #planning #highered #highereducation #wholepractice #design

Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation
This Fall semester 2023, in conjunction with my seminar “Just Practice: Considering the Just in Architectural Practice,” I have organized the “Rethinking Practice Symposium,” a timely conference on the different modes of architectural practice at Columbia University GSAPP to be held on November 10th. The symposium is organized around conversations on architecture and design practice framed by the topics of climate, equity, labor, and features designers, architects, and academics. Participants will alternate between presenting their practice work and discussing expanding ideas of practicing, tackling the issues of coloniality and modernity that have shaped the profession for a long time.
