📣 Today Rights CoLab announces the launch of a new initiative to equip investors with precision tools to assess the quality of portfolio companies’ human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD). Created for and with investors, each tool addresses an HREDD pain point for companies. A dedicated website (www.investorhreddtools.org) features the first two tools in the set: ✅ Certifications Red Flags (Beta Version), developed by Rights CoLab ✅ Investor Guidance on Responsible Contracting, developed by the Responsible Contracting Project and Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) Three more tools – on Stakeholder Engagement, Remedy, and an Engagement Script – are forthcoming. As an open platform, the partnership also welcomes HREDD tools developed by other organizations in order to create a one-stop-shop for tools aligned with international standards. In the coming months, Rights CoLab will host interactive Learning and Feedback sessions with investors to further test and refine the tools. https://lnkd.in/e6UXmRm6 #HREDD #ResponsibleInvesting #InvestorTools #DueDiligence #SustainableInvesting #ESG EIRIS Foundation Peter Webster Jana Hoess Egle Spina ESG Inteligente | Consultoria em Direitos Humanos e Sustentabilidade Danielle Anne Pamplona Melina Fachin Chavi Nana Rebecca DeWinter-Schmitt, PhD Caroline Boden Principles for Responsible Investment Rémi Fernandez Yanni Aissaoui-Helcke Sarah Dadush Red Godfrey-Sagoo Polly De Burgh Marsh Just Ground Shauna Curphey Manuela Corredor Vásquez Shawn MacDonald Anna Canning Mark Wielga Olivia Windham Stewart Charlotte Lush Humanity United Waseem Mardini The Generation Foundation Maria Elena Anker GCA Accountability Accelerator Natasha Milan Matic, Ph.D. Seema Joshi

In 2023-24 we partnered with Humanity United to facilitate a peer-learning network for organisations that use data to empower workers on the ground and support ethical supply chains. The key aim was to support organisations that use data to strengthen workers’ rights on the ground by providing financial support and opportunities to participate in knowledge-sharing and networking events to address more effectively the data challenges they experience. In this report, we review how an eight-month peer-learning network programme has enabled shared learning and collaboration and evaluate the impact this has had on the creation of a more open and integrated data ecosystem. Since October 7, more than 100 journalists and media workers in Gaza have been killed. This makes it one of the deadliest conflicts for journalists on record. The #GazaProject brings together 50 journalists from 13 different news organizations who felt they "had to unite" in order to investigate the "killing of journalists in Gaza and the alleged threats, targeting arrests made in the West Bank." Their series of investigations unveils a targeted campaign against press freedom and the dangers that these individuals face on a daily basis as they work to report on the horrors of war. "It is not naive to know that the only route to justice and equality is peace. The route is straightforward. We must create hope when hope is hard to find. We must amplify the voices of peacemakers. We must show that we are not divided by nationality, ethnicity or race. We are divided by those who believe in justice, peace and equality and those who don’t – yet." This opinion piece by Maoz Inon and Aziz Abu Sarah published in Al Jazeera English is a must-read that stresses the continued importance of working towards peace. https://lnkd.in/ea9Jwgz3

🔴 How are Israeli drones killing journalists in Gaza? For the #GazaProject, 50 journalists from 13 international newsrooms coordinated by Forbidden Stories investigated the targeting of those who were covering the war. ⬇️ Samer Abu Daqqa, Abdallah Al-Hajj, Ahmed Fatima, Anas Al-Sharif… their names are among those of the 18 reporters we identified as injured or killed by precision strikes launched by drones, since the outbreak of Israel’s war in Gaza following Hamas’ terrorist attack on October 7th. Four of them were wearing press vests and were clearly identifiable as journalists. 👉 https://lnkd.in/ejQ5rYbs The Israeli military is also using several artificial intelligence systems to generate targets. Lavender, an artificial intelligence–based program used to generate a kill list of over 37,000 people, has served as a blueprint for signature drone strikes since October 7, the consortium found. Journalists' presence in war zones is critical. They are our eyes on the ground. They can prevent war crimes from multiplying with impunity, and let the public in on what is happening. "Where there is strong potential for a war crime being committed, the live stream becomes critical evidence” says Irene Kahn, UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression and opinion. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTT93szk paper trail media GmbH ARIJ Network Le Monde The Guardian AFP +972 Magazine Radio France DER SPIEGEL DER STANDARD ZDF Tamedia

Humanity United strongly condemns the Kenyan government's violent response to protests against a tax-increasing bill that was later withdrawn. This has tragically led to deaths, injuries, and arrests. We urge the U.S. to use its influence to safeguard civil liberties in Kenya. 🇰🇪 Kenyan citizens demand military personnel return to their barracks and there be immediate release of all abducted by security forces. A mere pause of the bill won't erase the violence. Accountability is crucial. Read the full statement here: https://lnkd.in/egEvTm8y

Nonprofit news source ProPublica has won seven Pulitzer Prizes and is approaching its twentieth anniversary in 2027. Despite its continued success, Stephen Engelberg (Editor-in-Chief) has said, “one thing that has not changed is the mission, which was written in year one. The idea was to do investigative journalism that would spur change and have real world impact. To that, we have remained focused.” We believe in the transformative power and incredible democratic importance of a free press, which ProPublica has continued to champion over the last seventeen years. https://lnkd.in/ebBiVzE9

The U.S. Department of State published its annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report. This report serves as a cornerstone in the global battle against #HumanTrafficking, holding governments accountable for their policies, offering crucial data to stakeholders, and shedding light on significant trends and challenges. ➡️ This year’s report highlights the importance of worker empowerment to prevent forced labor. ➡️ The effects of climate change and extreme heat are driving the need for employers to create the conditions for climate-conscious work environments. ➡️ Humanity United welcomes the State Department’s continued emphasis on prioritizing the needs and voices of survivors and those with lived experience in this year’s report. ➡️ By calling attention to the scale of the issue within each country, the report provides a critical dataset for understanding and should spur action. Explore our statement for an in-depth analysis of the report's key insights: https://lnkd.in/ehmeHSHS

We stand with organizations like Amnesty International USA to call on President Biden to take action in Sudan. “Currently, El Fasher city in North Darfur is surrounded by the RSF and allied militias. Amnesty International has received reports of the burning of villages in North Darfur, escalating air strikes, shelling of residential areas including the Abu Shouk IDP camp, and blocking of aid deliveries by both parties to the conflict.” https://lnkd.in/dBB2smT8
