"It is not naive to know that the only route to justice and equality is peace. The route is straightforward. We must create hope when hope is hard to find. We must amplify the voices of peacemakers. We must show that we are not divided by nationality, ethnicity or race. We are divided by those who believe in justice, peace and equality and those who don’t – yet." This opinion piece by Maoz Inon and Aziz Abu Sarah published in Al Jazeera English is a must-read that stresses the continued importance of working towards peace. https://lnkd.in/ea9Jwgz3

Since October 7, more than 100 journalists and media workers in Gaza have been killed. This makes it one of the deadliest conflicts for journalists on record. The #GazaProject brings together 50 journalists from 13 different news organizations who felt they "had to unite" in order to investigate the "killing of journalists in Gaza and the alleged threats, targeting arrests made in the West Bank." Their series of investigations unveils a targeted campaign against press freedom and the dangers that these individuals face on a daily basis as they work to report on the horrors of war. Humanity United strongly condemns the Kenyan government's violent response to protests against a tax-increasing bill that was later withdrawn. This has tragically led to deaths, injuries, and arrests. We urge the U.S. to use its influence to safeguard civil liberties in Kenya. 🇰🇪 Kenyan citizens demand military personnel return to their barracks and there be immediate release of all abducted by security forces. A mere pause of the bill won't erase the violence. Accountability is crucial. Read the full statement here: https://lnkd.in/egEvTm8y

Nonprofit news source ProPublica has won seven Pulitzer Prizes and is approaching its twentieth anniversary in 2027. Despite its continued success, Stephen Engelberg (Editor-in-Chief) has said, “one thing that has not changed is the mission, which was written in year one. The idea was to do investigative journalism that would spur change and have real world impact. To that, we have remained focused.” We believe in the transformative power and incredible democratic importance of a free press, which ProPublica has continued to champion over the last seventeen years. https://lnkd.in/ebBiVzE9

The U.S. Department of State published its annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report. This report serves as a cornerstone in the global battle against #HumanTrafficking, holding governments accountable for their policies, offering crucial data to stakeholders, and shedding light on significant trends and challenges. ➡️ This year’s report highlights the importance of worker empowerment to prevent forced labor. ➡️ The effects of climate change and extreme heat are driving the need for employers to create the conditions for climate-conscious work environments. ➡️ Humanity United welcomes the State Department’s continued emphasis on prioritizing the needs and voices of survivors and those with lived experience in this year’s report. ➡️ By calling attention to the scale of the issue within each country, the report provides a critical dataset for understanding and should spur action. We stand with organizations like Amnesty International USA to call on President Biden to take action in Sudan. “Currently, El Fasher city in North Darfur is surrounded by the RSF and allied militias. Amnesty International has received reports of the burning of villages in North Darfur, escalating air strikes, shelling of residential areas including the Abu Shouk IDP camp, and blocking of aid deliveries by both parties to the conflict.” https://lnkd.in/dBB2smT8

1wExtremely beautiful and it’s the kind of message that the world desperately needs. Thank you so much for sharing. “One of us lost his parents on October 7, the other lost his brother in the first Intifada. It was this mutual loss, pain and shared vision that brought us together.” “Our plan includes letting go of our bitterness, hate, and the desire for revenge. Both of us have embarked on journeys of forgiveness. Hatred is a corrosive force, leaving one empty inside. It breeds physical and emotional illness, with nothing that can quench the thirst of such desire. We’ve come to understand that forgiveness, unlike reconciliation, is a personal choice. It is a decision we make not because the perpetrators deserve it, but because we prioritise our shared humanity over animosity. We forgive because we refuse to allow others to exploit our pain to justify harming innocent individuals.”
