💬 “We wanted to show the world images never seen before … And indeed, we captured truly terrifying, unprecedented images of destruction.” On December 15, 2023, Samer Abu Daqqa and Wael Al Dahdouh were reporting for #AlJazeera in Khan Younis in southern #Gaza when an alleged Israeli drone strike hit them. Only Wael Al Dahdouh made it alive. For the #GazaProject, we pursued their last report together ⬇️ Khan Younis, a city of 400,000 inhabitants before the war began, is now reduced to ruins. The two journalists were accompanying Civil Defense rescue workers when they were hit by #Israeli fire. They were on a mission to recover an excavator stuck in the courtyard of Farhana school for their rescue operations, which we were able to locate three months later. We contacted Ruaa, a 17-year-old former student at Farhana school, who told us about the waste of that lost year after her school was almost entirely destroyed. An Israeli military spokesperson said Abu Daqqa’s case is being examined internally. Al Jazeera and Reporters Without Borders referred the case to the International Criminal Court. 👉 Read more here: English: https://shorturl.at/TXdJI Arabic: https://shorturl.at/ndslD French: https://shorturl.at/jEoWL paper trail media GmbH ARIJ Network Le Monde The Guardian AFP +972 Magazine Radio France DER SPIEGEL DER STANDARD ZDF Tamedia
Forbidden Stories

🗞️ "We request that Israeli authorities end immediately the restrictions on foreign media entering Gaza" With the Committee to Protect Journalists and more than 60 media organizations, we are asking Israel to open independent access to #Gaza for journalists and let us report from war zones.
Media organizations urge Israel to open access to Gaza. “More than 100 journalists have been killed since the start of the war and those who remain are working in conditions of extreme deprivation. The result is that information from Gaza is becoming harder and harder to obtain and that the reporting which does get through is subject to repeated questions over its veracity,” the organizations say in the letter, which was coordinated by the Committee to Protect Journalists. 🔴 Since October 7, journalists in the #WestBank have reported an increase in harassment and violence by the Israeli military and settlers. For the #GazaProject, Forbidden Stories and its partners pursued their work, covering West Bank settlement expansion and the forced displacement of local communities. We used satellite imagery and open-source research to map the expansion of settler infrastructure. Under international law, settlements – Israeli-government-approved communities built on occupied #Palestinian land since the 1967 Six-Day War – are illegal. Analysis indicates a growth of infrastructure, including in Wadi al-Siq and other areas such as Mitzpe Yeriho and Vered Yeriho where #settlers and #soldiers have allegedly threatened journalists. Dozens of sites were identified throughout the West Bank, with new roads, buildings, or cleared lands near settlements or outposts. Settler communities also publicized their expansion online, including in Airbnb listings, on Booking. com, in YouTube videos, and social media posts. 🔴 Wild Grass in the Rubble: hunger in northern Gaza through the eyes of the Khair Al-Din brothers For the #GazaProject, Forbidden Stories and its partners looked into the humanitarian situation in northern #Gaza after two journalists were allegedly targeted by a drone strike while reporting on starvation there. On February 18, the Khair Al-Din brothers, two Palestinian journalists, were filming families harvesting wild plants to feed themselves in Beit Lahia. Seconds after they started filming, a missile was fired. Hopefully, they had time to shelter behind a low concrete wall. Although it is difficult to say whether they were targeted or not, the fact remains that the two brothers dramatically decreased their workload. The humanitarian situation in northern Gaza is unprecedented. Just feeding oneself is a daily challenge and the health system is in a desperate condition. Following the rise in prices, people are now eating plant leaves, and diseases such as hepatitis A are starting to spread according to the World Health Organization.
