Program Officer Caroline Bersak was thrilled to attend the first ever National Child Care Innovation Summit, hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. This groundbreaking event brought together the business, government, nonprofit, and philanthropic sectors to spotlight the U.S.'s growing child care crisis and to explore innovative child care policies and models. It was great to hear so many leaders, including U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, CEO of Moms First (a Burke partner) Reshma Saujani, and the Governors of Massachusetts, Colorado, and Indiana agreeing that child care is infrastructure, a public good, and an economic imperative, and that our broken child care system is in urgent need of greater investment. We'll be sharing learnings from this event with partners on our First 1,000 Days Policy Coalition who working to improve New Jersey's child care system. #First1000Days #ChildCare #First1000DaysPolicyCoalition

ICYMI: We spoke with Dr. Bob Atkins of Johns Hopkins School of Nursing for our recent issue of Starting Early (read here: https://lnkd.in/erBzZpUn) about the power of community nursing and what we can do to address the nursing shortage. As Bob said: “A lot of people want to be nurses — they just don’t know it yet. And we haven’t done a good job of communicating to them, ‘This is actually where you want to be. You would love to use your head and your heart and your hands every day.'” Read the rest of our conversation here: https://lnkd.in/eDNgGRhB #nursing #CommunityNursing #HealthcareEquity #FamilyConnects

👋 In today's Starting Early, we highlight the vital role of nurses in improving healthcare. We look at why culturally congruent care matters — especially for mothers and infants of color — and ways to strengthen and diversify the nursing workforce. Don't miss our conversation with Dr. Bob Atkins, executive vice dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing who emphasized the necessity of community nurses, what they need to succeed, and the outsized impact they can have on health equity. 💡 Spotlight on Dads: A Fresh Approach to Parental Health Federal surveys traditionally focused on new mothers' health but spend little time collecting data on the health of fathers and non-birthing parents. Now, thanks to an innovative pilot, a few states are changing the game to help monitor the well-being of new dads too: https://lnkd.in/ej5QRbVb The Burke Foundation supports PRAMS for Dads initiative through funding and community partnership, aiding in the development of the New Jersey Fatherhood Survey, which will collect data on the experiences of new fathers. So far, learnings from other states show that dads can help with safe sleep and breastfeeding (https://lnkd.in/eCp9NNSs). In Georgia, it was found that 99 percent of fathers place their infant to sleep, but only 16 percent practice all three CDC-recommended safe sleep practices. Ultimately, we need a lot more information to better understand the role of fathers both pre and post partum. 🎙️ Tune in to Here & Now's segment with Dr. Craig Garfield for the scoop, and happy early Father’s Day! ❤️ #ParentalHealth #NewDads #InclusiveCare #Dads #Father #Fathers #FathersDay 🌈 University of Chicago Ann & Robert H. Working moms face a ‘motherhood penalty’ in the labor market: lower wages and slower career advancement. Our partners at the Rutgers University - Center for Women and Work have created an incredible report that lays out all the evidence: https://lnkd.in/eQhsiMsX 🔍 New Jersey ranks in the lowest 25% of states for median earnings differences between mothers and fathers. 💰 Married fathers have the highest median income, while married mothers face the largest earnings penalty, especially those under 45. 📍 Monmouth County sees the highest penalty for mothers, while Essex County experiences the lowest. 📊Notably, Essex County boasts the highest premium for fathers. What can employers and states do to bring mothers’ earnings in line with fathers? Increase access to paid family leave and high-quality, affordable childcare. #First1000DaysPolicyCoalition #Paidfamilyleave #motherhoodpenalty

Great to see this highlight of Rutgers University - Center for Women and Work, one of our partners in the First 1,000 Days Policy Coalition. Two-generation policies like #paidfamilyleave support healthy families and a thriving workforce. #NJFamilies #PaidLeave
Our Rutgers University - Center for Women and Work team member, Rebecca Logue-Conroy, MSW, PhD was a guest on the public radio show On Point this week. She talked about how #paidfamilyleave is helping #NJ families and the important role that job protection plays in the equitable implementation of leave policies. The whole hour is great, but to hear Becky, listen at 20:32. https://lnkd.in/euX7quR2

In our recent #StartingEarly, we highlight the sandwich generation — adults who care for both children and their own aging parents. We dive into the stresses this group faces, and how Paid Family Leave can alleviate some of the burden. We also provide tools and resources for caregivers from community connections to mental health support. And don’t miss “One Smile to Go,” a joyful reflection from Capita’s Joe Waters on intergenerational living.
