What are the most difficult challenges for conversion optimization professionals?
We must learn what customers really want, not what they say they want or what we think they should want - Eric Reis. So "understanding" them, not just listening, or responding, or speaking to is rule number 1. The ways to do this are implicitly and explicitly. Both have their flaws and both have their advantages, so like any other good sit on the fence marketing answer of "it depends", it's about doing both in equal measure.

What are the best practices for personalizing e-commerce product pages?
Appropriateness is key. Understanding the customer’s intent to be able to serve the right messages, in the right order (consider hierarchy), at the right time is hugely impactful. Consider what a PDP is: a template. Generically thrown together. If we understood customer intent, that content could be dynamic; appropriate for where the user is at their stage of the journey. If they have a low intent (first time visits, generic keyword to arrive there) consider amping up product recommendations (see wayfair). If they have a higher intent (4th visit, item already in bag) focus on delivery, returns etc. All to be tested of course.
