NCT Chief Executive, Angela McConville, shares her reflections at the end of Birth Trauma Awareness Week. #BTAW2024
As Birth Trauma Awareness Week comes to a close, our message to the new Government is clear - act now to end the unacceptable and dangerous rate of #birthtrauma in the UK. Imagine the positive social change it would create if all women and parents received personalised and safe care as they help to build the foundations of the future. #BTAW2024

NCT Charity reposted this
As the new Prime Minister and his family settle into Number 10, it is worth reflecting on the future being created for the 1,600 babies born the day he was elected to office. These newborns represent the potential of our country, and their families and caregivers are helping build the foundations of the future. Our country needs a fresh approach to supporting people as they become parents and bring new lives into the world. Women’s experiences of #maternity care have deteriorated significantly over the last decade, and issues of understaffing and workforce retention, health and socio-economic #inequalities, poor continuity of care, and lack of good #postnatal care persist. The new Government is inheriting legacy systems, issues, backlogs - including a failing maternity and broken postnatal care system. Failing to act will leave its own legacy – communities of families across the country carrying birth traumas and injuries, mental health challenges, lost loved ones. It will create the belief that to start a family is too risky, or simply too costly for many. It will also continue to cost the NHS dearly. Maternity failings accounted for the majority of the NHS’s £13bn spend on negligence in 2021-22, and last week alone two hospital trusts were told to pay out £92 million for birth and maternity failings for which they were responsible. The secret of change will be to focus our energy on envisioning and building a new equitable, compassionate, person-centered maternity system. At NCT, we look forward to working in partnership with the new Government to deliver its manifesto promises on #women’s #health. We know that resources are finite, and if the Government can do more with what it has at its disposal, then they may succeed in stemming this flow of litigation payments and be able to invest in improving services – not just apologising and compensating for when they go terribly wrong. Some changes won’t be possible overnight – rebalancing the shortage in midwives, for example – but others are possible, such as setting an explicit target to close the Black and Asian maternal mortality gap. Let’s act quickly and with intention where we can and long-term vision where we can’t. As a priority, this new Government must create the conditions for fresh thinking and system-wide reimagination, and through collaboration across #maternity, #neonatal and local authority sectors, including charities and not-for-profits. Now is the time for leadership and action to implement systemic change so that all women, families and their babies receive the personalised, equitable and safe care they deserve.
