Weaning is a huge milestone for babies (and parents!) as they move from a liquid, milk diet to eating solid foods alongside milk. We know that breast and formula milk contain everything baby needs to grow and thrive, but when that milk consumption drops and food takes over, what nutrients do children or little ones need and how can we make sure that they're going to get enough of them? If you are about to start weaning, or you’re right in the thick of it, you will learn so much from this conversation with registered nutritionist Aliya Porter RNutr Aliya talks to Kate about setting the right diet and nutrition foundations and what’s really important when considering what foods to give your weaning baby. We know this is a topic that we will revisit - there is so much to know and learn! Check it out now at Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you like to listen and don’t forget to check the show notes for a whole list of amazing resources to do with weaning and nutrition.

Staggering statistics about preventable children's burns from Children's Burns Trust. We share statistics like this not to frighten parents but to act as a reminder to always remain vigilant, in the home and when out in restaurants and coffee shops. If your child receives a burn: 💚 Cool the burn with running cool tap water for at least 20 minutes. 💚 Remove any clothing and jewellery near the burn (unless it is melted or firmly stuck to the wound) 💚 Cover with cling film or a sterile non-fluffy dressing or cloth. Make sure the child is kept warm. 💚 If necessary call for help – 999 or 111.

If you are part of the so-called ‘sandwich generation’, caught between caring for ageing parents and supporting your children, we know this conversation will strike a chord. In today's Family Health Podcast episode, we chat about dementia, a condition that not only affects individuals directly but also ripples through the lives of their loved ones. Kate chats with Dr Abhi Inglis, a Specialty Doctor in Old Age Psychiatry who explains what dementia is, some of the more common early signs and symptoms and how we can best help our loved one. We also hear from Jayne Sibley of Sibstar whose parents both had dementia and sadly died with this condition. Jayne talks to us about the emotional, financial, and practical burdens carried by those balancing the demands of caregiving with the progression of dementia. We hope you take comfort and help from the information and resources signposted in this episode. You can find links to helpful resources on the show notes and find the Family Health Podcast on all your favourite podcast platforms.

❗️TW: Eating Disorders According to recent statistics from the NHS, the struggle with body image and food among young people has surged alarmingly in recent years, with children as young as six years old being diagnosed with an eating disorder. In today’s episode of the Family Health Podcast, Kate chats about eating disorders with Olivia Bowden - Senior Lead, a body image coach and Pernille Yilmam, PhD, Founder and CEO of MindBlossom. Our Dragons’ Den mentor Sara Davies MBE had gestational diabetes in both of her pregnancies and talks to Kate on this week's Family Health Podcast about the guilt she felt when first diagnosed and what she has since learned about this condition that affects around 5% of pregnant women in the UK. We also chat with Cathy Tabner of My Expert Midwife who knows all there is to know about pregnancy, your body and gestational diabetes. We talked about mum guilt, pregnancy hormones, how the placenta works, what happens in your body when pregnant and how your diet can help control gestational diabetes - this conversation is gold! *Please note, this episode references Dr Michael Mosley’s work, in particular his blood sugar diet. This episode was recorded prior to his tragic death. You can find the Family Health Podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and all major podcast platforms or head to the link in the comments now 💚

This week both of my daughters have taken part in first aid training in school, as part of their ‘Wellbeing week’. I think this is amazing and such vital life skills, as you never know what can happen from one day to the next. My youngest, who is currently in reception learnt about choking, helping someone into the recovery position on the floor, applying a cold compress, when and how to call the emergency services and provide their address. My eldest who is in year 4 learnt how to administer an EpiPen, choking and CPR. The training was carried out by Mini First Aid 👏🏻👏🏻

Last week our founder Kate had the pleasure of presenting a keynote talk at Karren Brady's Women in Business & Tech Expo in Manchester. In a strange quirk of fate, Kate's talk was on the anniversary of her brother Matt's sudden death from cardiomyopathy when he was just 22 years old. This devastating family tragedy was the catalyst for Kate's mission to ensure that everyone knows how to do CPR and save a life. And so Mini First Aid was born. Fitting, then, to talk about her business journey on this day. Thank you Karren Brady and to Fiona Duffin at Hub Exhibitions for co-ordinating the event.

Thank you to Victoria Kenyon for this lovely feedback about a corporate baby & child first aid session provided to the Staff Affinity Parents' Group at Latham & Watkins by Gemma da Silva of Mini First Aid Manchester South. "I am writing to express our heartfelt appreciation for the Baby and Child First Aid training session run by Mini First Aid South Manchester, for our Staff Affinity Parents' Group at Latham & Watkins.   The sessions were not only informative but also wonderfully engaging, fun, and memorable. Gemma's approach to teaching vital first aid skills was exceptional, making the learning process accessible and enjoyable for everyone involved. Her ability to create a relaxed yet focused atmosphere allowed for an interactive and supportive learning environment.   All participants have expressed how much they have learned and the significant increase in their confidence levels regarding first aid. The practical exercises, especially the use of resuscitation dolls, were invaluable in providing hands-on experience that we believe will be crucial in a real-life situation.   Moreover, the session served as a fantastic opportunity for colleagues from different departments to come together, fostering a sense of community and teamwork within our firm.   We would highly recommend your services to others and look forward to the possibility of organising future sessions.   Thank you once again for an outstanding training experience."
