Sonitpur election results 2024 live updates: BJP's Ranjit Dutta wins

NEW DELHI: The election results in Sonitpur, Assam, have been announced. Ranjit Dutta of the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged victorious, securing 775,788 votes, which is 361,408 more than his closest rival. Premlal Ganju of the Indian National Congress came in second place with 414,380 votes, trailing the winner by a significant margin.
Rishiraj Kaundinya from the Aam Aadmi Party secured 33,048 votes, while Raju Deuri of the Bodoland Peoples Front obtained 19,892 votes.Independent candidate Pradip Bhandari received 8,205 votes, followed by Kameswar Swargiary of the Voters Party International with 7,382 votes. Rinku Roy from the Gana Suraksha Party garnered 6,823 votes, and Alam Ali of the Bahujan Maha Party secured 4,202 votes.
The "None of the Above" (NOTA) option was chosen by 18,748 voters, indicating their dissatisfaction with the available candidates. The winning margin for Ranjit Dutta was substantial, highlighting the strong support he received from the constituents of Sonitpur.
Sonitpur, formerly known as Tezpur, is a Lok Sabha constituency in Assam, situated in the North East region and the Upper Assam area. This rural constituency, classified under the General category, includes the districts of Biswanath, Lakhimpur, and Sonitpur. Sonitpur participated in Phase 1 of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on April 19, 2024.The voter turnout was 78.46%.

In the 2009 elections, Joseph Toppo of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) defeated Moni Kumar Subba of the INC by a margin of 30,153 votes, representing 3.58% of the total votes cast in the constituency.The vote share in previous elections also highlights the dominance of the BJP in this constituency. In the 2019 elections, Pallab Lochan Das secured a vote share of 57.4%. In the 2014 elections, Ram Prasad Sarmah obtained a vote share of 45.53%.
