Ranchi: Ranchi University (RU) would move the Supreme Court (SC) against the order issued by the Jharkhand high court (HC) on June 27 that directed the principals to enrol students in intermediate courses in its constituent degree colleges.
The RU had on April 20 asked all principals to enrol 384 students in each stream of intermediate section of its 13 constituent degree colleges.
It, however, issued a notification on April 23, cancelling the earlier order. Next, the high court, while hearing a PIL filed by activist Mahesh Patwari on June 27, asked the RU to open the Chancellor’s Portal to fill the seats.
RU vice-chancellor (VC) Ajit Kumar Sinha said, “We would approach the Supreme Court against the high court’s order. Our university is scheduled to undergo National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) grading this year. The assessment team would give us low grade if they find that we have gone back on our commitment to separate intermediate courses from our constituent degree colleges.” Sinha had earlier stated that no intermediate classes would be held in degree colleges from this year based on the order of the governor and the UGC.
Jharkhand Angibhut Mahavidyalaya Intermediate Sikshak/Sikshettar Karamchari Morcha and various students’ wings have demonstrated before the university, demanding intermediate classes. On July 4, a National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) delegation met the dean (Students’ Welfare), Sudesh Kumar Sahu, and said that students were waiting in hope that admission would begin. On May 10, AJSU students’ wing gheraoed the RU on the issue. Morcha general secretary Ramanuj Pandey said, “If the university moves the SC, we will fight against them there too.”
