3 poachers arrested, one on the run
CHENNAI: The state wildlife crime control bureau (WCCB) has arrested four poachers from Odhiyampet, Puducherry and Tindivanam. Three were remanded to judicial custody, while one escaped. A country-made gun was seized from them.
Those arrested are Sathyaraj, Vijay and Surya while Ajith is on the run. They are involved in poaching birds, reptiles, and mammals across Villupuram district and Puducherry.
A senior WCCB official said they registered a surge in complaints about poaching of migratory birds. In response, a special team arrested the gang when they crossed into Tamil Nadu and seized their country-made gun. They were booked under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
The official said the poachers target migratory birds using unlicenced weapons and have a history of poaching.
