NAGPUR: Maharashtra leader of opposition, Congress's Vijay Wadettiwar, has questioned the Mahayuti govt's Rs 11 crore reward for India's T-20 champion team at a time when the state's distressed farmers are ending their lives and govt reels under a staggering debt of Rs 7.9 lakh crore.
"At least 1,068 farmers died by suicide in four months, yet they receive no help.
The reward to cash-rich cricket players was unwarranted and Maharashtra govt did so for self-promotion," Wadettiwar said. "We should support players but within our means and must give due weightage considering the broader picture," Wadettiwar added.
The Bramhapuri MLA reaffirmed the opposition MVA coalition's unity and readiness for the assembly elections in Oct-Nov this year. "None of three opposition allies - Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar), and Congress - intend to contest separately. A meeting of MVA is scheduled in Mumbai to plan a robust campaign strategy," Wadettiwar said.
On deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis' recent meeting with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Wadettiwar said: "Their ideology demands certain alignments, and post-elections, they might feel the need for Sangh's intervention. Before polls, their leaders in Delhi had commented that they did not need the Sangh."
