Belagavi: With incessant rainfall in the Maharashtra region, the water level in the Karnataka part of River Krishna and its tributaries is rising. According to local administration sources, the water level in the Krishna has gone up by 6 feet in Chikodi and Athani taluks over the past four days. This increase is due to the increased outflow of water from reservoirs in Maharashtra.
On the other side, Malaprabha and Mahadayi rivers and streams are overflowing due to heavy rains in Kanakumbi and Bhimagada forest areas in Khanapur taluk.
Due to downpours in the Western Ghats, the water level of the Krishna River and its tributaries has increased to a great extent. According to sources, 3 tmc feet of water flowed into the Koyna Dam in Satara district of the state of Maharashtra in 24 hours. Koyna Dam with a capacity of 105 tmc ft accumulated 23.5 tmc feet of water on Thursday. The water storage of the Dhom, Kaner, Warana, Kalammawadi, and Radhanagari Reservoirs built on the Krishna and its tributaries in Maharashtra, has increased significantly.
Although the rainfall in the Chikodi sub-division is less, the river flow has increased due to rains in Maharashtra, the catchment area of Krishna and its tributaries. The flow of Krishna River rose by 6 feet on Thursday. There was an inflow of 26,115 cusecs into the Krishna River here on Wednesday. The inflow increased by about 20,000 cusecs in 24 hours.
According to the officials of Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL), on Thursday 46,795 cusec of water flowed into Krishna River including 37,250 cusecs from Rajapur barrage and 9,545 cusecs from Doodhganga River, near Kallol barrage in Chikodi taluk, the confluence of Krishna and Doodhganga River.
There is an inflow of 45,080 cusecs into the 6 tmc ft capacity Hipparagi barrage near Athani across the Krishna. 800 cusecs outflow is maintained from Hipparagi Barrage. There is an inflow of 34,584 cusecs into the Almatti reservoir and 450 cusecs of water is being released from the reservoir on Thursday.
Temple submerged
Due to the heavy rain in Khanapur taluk, Mahadayi and Malaprabha rivers and streams are overflowing in Kanakumbi and Bhimagada forest. Swayambhu Anjaneya temple of Habbanahatti village was submerged in Malaprabha water on Wednesday. Road connectivity has been cut to many villages in the forest area. According to revenue department officials, in the last 24 hours, Kanakumbi received 195mm of rain, Jamboti 115mm and Ashoga got 105mm of rain. Assistant commissioner SS Sampagavi, who visited the banks of Krishna River near Yadur, warned that people should not enter the water for any reason.
