State set to plant 2 lakh trees this year
Panaji: Principal chief conservator of forests for Goa, Kamal Dutta, on Friday said a target has been set to plant two lakh trees in Goa. This is based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s target of planting 140 crore trees across the country.
“The slogan ‘Ek paudha maa ke naam’ (one plant in the name of the mother) inculcates a sense of love and affection. Trees are invaluable.
We must pledge to plant, nurture and protect them. Trees help sequester carbon to reduce carbon emissions,” Dutta said at the 2024 Vanamahotsava event.
Chief secretary Puneet Goel said, “Goans have always loved nature. When I was appointed in Goa in 1993, I saw its beauty filled with nature and prosperity.” The plantation programme began at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Farmagudi, Ponda.
S S Gaonkar, director of ITI, emphasised the importance of planting trees during the event.
