Dehradun: The southwest monsoon is currently active over
Uttarakhand, resulting in widespread rain over the past 48 hours. The state received 206% more than the average
rainfall in the past 24 hours, with some districts in Kumaon recording the highest excess.
Champawat district received over 100mm of rain compared to the normal 15mm, marking a surplus of 562%. Nainital also had incessant showers, nearly 400% above normal, according to the meteorological centre.
Other Kumaon districts, such as Udham Singh Nagar, Pithoragarh, Almora, and Bageshwar, also recorded over 200% surplus.
“The monsoon is active over Uttarakhand, and we have recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms at isolated places in the state over the past 24 hours. As predicted, the rains were particularly intense in parts of the Kumaon region,” said Bikram Singh, director of the regional meteorological centre.
The recent showers helped reduce the rainfall deficit this monsoon. The deficit, hovering between -40% and -50% in June, has turned into an overall rain surplus of 7% for the season.
