New police commissioner A Arun has said that he would talk to criminals “in their own language”
CHENNAI: Three days after a gang murdered BSP state president K Armstrong in the city, A Arun has replaced Sandeep Rai Rathore as Chennai city police commissioner. Soon after taking charge on Monday, Arun, without mentioning the Armstrong murder, vowed to talk to criminals "in their language".
The home department has downgraded the post of the commissioner of police from DGP rank to ADGP rank.
Sandeep Rai Rathore has been posted as DGP (training) at Police Training College.
He has also been assigned additional charge of Tamil Nadu Police Academy (TNPA) in Oonamancherry near Vandalur. ADGP, state headquarters, S Davidson Devasirvatham, has been posted as ADGP, law and order.
Rathore had hailed three new criminal laws
TNPA director and DGP Rajeev Kumar has been transferred and posted in vacancy reserve, assigned without any post. Earlier, Arun was assigned the additional charge of Enforcement Bureau - CID (EB-CID) director following the deaths of 65 people in the hooch tragedy in Kallakurichi. Arun will technically continue to hold the charge of the EB-CID director post.
Police sources said Rathore was moved out because of the BSP leader's murder by a gang of six near his house at Sembium. Sources noted that while the state govt is opposed to the new laws - BNS, BNSS, and BSA - Rathore had given media interviews appreciating the legislation.
