Chandigarh: All the back lanes in the city will now be illuminated with LED lights for the safety of residents. The civic body has prepared a detailed report on this, pegging the cost at Rs 8.19 lakh.
The issue will now be taken up at the coming monthly General House meeting this Tuesday. An approval for the same is expected at the meeting.
At present, there are no lights in the back lanes of the city, posing a threat of thefts and other illegal activities in residential areas.
Municipal councillors had requested installation of LED lights. Considering the request, the issue was taken up by higher authorities and a meeting led by superintending engineer (horticultural and electrical) was held.
As per the details provided, the work involves supply of 1O watt wall-mounted LED bulkhead lights, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of junction box.
The expenditure shall be met from 2024-25 budget allocation.
As per information available, the engineers at the civic body have decided that the cable for these back lanes will be laid over the wall surface, as digging in back lanes would be unviable. Last year, the civic body had hired a private contractor to look after the maintenance work of the back lanes after renovating most of them.
