Visuals of Jog Falls cascading in full force have been circulating online as heavy monsoon rains hit the Malnad and coastal Karnataka regions. The monsoons have brought Karnataka’s waterfalls back to life, but authorities are urging caution as tourists flock to these scenic spots. The warnings come in the wake of a recent tragedy at Lonavala’s Bhushi Dam, where five members of a family were swept away by a sudden surge of water from a nearby waterfall.
In light of similar incidents in Karnataka over the past few years, the Forest Department has taken a decisive step to prioritise visitor safety by imposing a ban on entry to some waterfalls. These measures aim to prevent accidents due to the increased risk during the monsoon season when waterfalls are at their most powerful.
Authorities restrict entry to several waterfalls due to monsoon risks
In June, the Forest Department temporarily banned tourist entry to the popular Ettina Bhuja trek in Chikkamagaluru district. As per reports, the decision followed a surge in tourist activity. Despite efforts to limit visitors through online ticketing, over 20,000 people flocked to Ettina Bhuja in just three days. Now, similar measures are being taken across the state. Warning boards have been placed at waterfalls, barring entry due to safety risks. Karkala district, for example, reportedly issued an order on July 1 temporarily barring tourists from waterfalls and other forest locations due to heavy rainfall.
Monsoon advisory issued
● Avoid taking selfies at risky locations, especially near overflowing waterfalls or rivers ● Increased patrolling by forest officials at Charmadi Ghat, Kemmannugundi, and other popular tourist spots ● Be a responsible tourist and maintain cleanliness at all times. Dispose of waste properly and avoid littering ● Always heed the guidelines set forth by the Forest Department and district administration
— Vikram Amathe, superintendent of police, Chikkamagaluru
