Are companies seeking a candidate that doesn't exist? At the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam yesterday the panel discussion on "Careers Combatting Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities in the Hydrogen Sector" sparked some compelling insights and highlighted the challenges and opportunities in building human capabilities for the Hydrogen Economy. While it is true that the hydrogen sector is rapidly evolving, demanding a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability, there are ways of bridging the disparity between existing skill sets and the evolving needs of the hydrogen market. Transitioning from conventional energy requires strategic navigation, but achievements in conventional energy aren't obsolete and they are instead often seen as transferable assets. Recognising and articulating the transferable nature of these achievements can redefine one's career narrative in the clean energy realm. As we embark on this transformative journey, let us remain committed to bridging the gap between existing skill sets and the evolving needs of the hydrogen market, ensuring that together, we build a brighter and more sustainable future. Getting ahead on national AI adoption and innovation takes hard work. Falling behind could take only a moment of hesitation. This is the warning from Google based on our new study on the economic potential of generative AI in the Netherlands, conducted by our team in Implement Consulting Group. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗔𝗟: The Netherlands has consistently led AI adoption and development within Europe. Consequently, The Netherlands is well placed to capture the benefits of the new wave of AI. Our analysis identifies that generative AI could boost the Netherlands' GDP by €80-85 billion over the next ten years, assuming widespread adoption. This represents a potential increase of up to 9% in GDP. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗞: However, capturing these potentials will require further action. A delay in adopting and developing generative AI could significantly reduce its economic benefits—from a potential 9% increase in GDP to just 2%. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗔𝗬 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗: To fully capture AI's potential, strategic policy initiatives must be implemented. Recommendations for the Netherlands include: ⚡ Enhance AI research and development: Increase investment in AI research and foster innovation ecosystems by supporting public-private partnerships and academia-industry collaborations. ⚡ Upskill and reskill the workforce: Implement robust programs to upskill and reskill the workforce, especially targeting sectors and jobs most susceptible to transformation or displacement by AI technologies. ⚡ Strengthen AI infrastructure and accessibility: Invest even in digital infrastructure to support AI technologies, ensuring that advanced computational resources are accessible to businesses of all sizes, including startups and SMEs. What do Dundee in Scotland and Eindhoven in Netherlands have in common? Both have undergone a huge transformation over the past years, from old industrialism to entirely new urban economies, knowledge-driven and now on the way to carbon-free. They had to re-invent themselves, and in that transition innovative place branding were extensively used, and still is, as a main facilitator, even as a change accelerator. Commissioned by the Just Transition Platform of the European Commission, we have designed a workshop on innovative place branding as a tool for transformation processes. The aim is learning how ambitions, efforts and achievements on sustainability and carbon neutrality, major and minor ones, should be properly embedded into a renovated, comprehensive narrative of the city. This entails, at some point, promoting, curating and wide spreading stories on this matter. Looking outward, such a storytelling will showcase our progress to a Just Transition. Looking inside, the stories will have a demonstration effect to influence people and entities from our communities.  First exchange will be with the Aegean island of Limnos on June 18, followed by an online workshop with the Heraklion community on July 3. Some high-level reflections from #WHC World Hydrogen Summit this week in Rotterdam where I was with Dharmesh Jadavji A) Project developers are getting clearer on what target business model is emerging for each of their projects. Mandates for grey hydrogen and RFNBOs in transport at EU level, along with emergence of several planned subsidy auctions at state level means that the pathway to bankability is becoming clearer B) Everyone is raising eyebrows at the European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) auction results. These results imply a significant voluntary green premium for some of the winning bids (and many of the losing ones). There are two possible explanations for this: 1) Consumers of grey hydrogen (or grey ammonia) are willing to pay a premium either in expectation of a state mandate aimed at delivering the RED III mandate AND/OR have the ability to pass on premia downstream in the value chain. 2) Subsidies are being stacked on top of local incentives which are allowed under EHB rules for subsidy stacking. C) The EHB results highlight disparity in green hydrogen production costs across Europe. Example: Germany is 2x more expensive to produce green hydrogen than Spain. But German power is not 2x as expensive as Spanish power. This outcome highlights the impact of the EU's RFNBO rules in providing advantage to countries with ample renewable power generation.
