Day 1 of the Global Infrastructure Initiative Summit is in the books! It’s been an inspiring day hearing from senior executives across the infrastructure value chain. A few facts on why this is such a critical moment for candid discussions in infrastructure: ➡️Reaching net-zero could require $9.2 trillion of annual spending on physical assets; and of this, $3.5 trillion could be new spending on low-emissions infrastructure. ➡️By 2050, 1 in every 6 people will be above 65 years old – leading to dramatic workforce shifts and placing new demands on cities. The infrastructure sector alone will need to fill up to 13 million jobs cumulatively by 2031. ➡️Underlying all these are fundamental project delivery flaws, with an average project cost overrun of $1.28 billion. That’s a wrap on day 2 of the Global Infrastructure Initiative Summit. The GII Summit is something I look forward to every 18 months – and this week has truly been a reminder of the wealth of innovation and leadership this community holds. There's an urgent demand for the infrastructure required to achieve climate commitments, the energy transition, and revamped cities, but the engineering sector is facing delivery challenges from talent shortage and a traditional business model. To transform, seven disruptive features have emerged, largely driven by fast-moving changes in software engineering. Europe leads the world in reducing carbon emissions and on most dimensions of economic inclusion and social progress, but its per capita income remains 27 percent lower than in the United States. Its companies are also falling behind in R&D spending, investment, growth, and return on capital.
