Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) RiderCoaches

Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) RiderCoaches provide instruction on motorcycle rider education and are eligible to work anywhere in the U.S. once they are certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.

If you are an experienced rider with good riding and communication skills, you may qualify to become an MSF certified RiderCoach. Becoming an MSF RiderCoach is a great way to improve your own abilities while helping others to learn or enhance their riding skills.

To become an MSF-certified RiderCoach you must, at a minimum:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a valid license with a motorcycle (CY) endorsement for a minimum of 1 year
  • Have passed the Basic Rider Course (BRC) or the BRC2 within one calendar year before attending the RiderCoach Preparation Course
  • Have no more than 6 points on your driving record for moving violations during the 12 months before applying for approval as a RiderCoach

RiderCoaches must complete and pass the RiderCoach Preparation Course (RCP). To enroll in an RCP, RiderCoach candidates must sign up with and be sponsored by a Michigan Department of State-approved MI-REP sponsor. RiderCoach candidates must attend 80 hours of classroom and range activity without missing a session and pass a riding skills and knowledge test. They will learn how to teach in the classroom and on the range and, as a final requirement, must successfully conduct a Basic Rider Course while under the supervision of a certified RiderCoach trainer.

Locate a MI-REP sponsor

To enroll in the RiderCoach Preparation Course, RiderCoaches candidates must be sponsored by a Michigan Department of State-approved public or private MI-REP sponsor offering MSF rider safety training courses.

The RiderCoach Preparation Course is approximately 80 hours of classroom and range activity. This course is periodically offered at various locations throughout the state and may be held over several consecutive days or a few weekends. RiderCoach candidates are required to pay a $75 fee for course registration and materials. 

As part of this course, RiderCoach candidates will be required to attend and participate in every session, pass a riding skills test and a knowledge test. They will learn how to teach in the classroom, how to manage the range exercise, and how to evaluate and coach students as they develop their riding skills. The final requirement for certification as a RiderCoach candidate is successful completion of student teaching to a group of BRC new riders.

The following programs offer training for experienced riders interested in becoming MSF-certified RiderCoaches:

MI-REP sponsors

Private and public sponsors may apply to provide training through the Michigan Motorcycle Rider Education Program (MI-REP). MI-REP sponsors must meet the following requirements:

  • Instructors must be active RiderCoaches: MI-REP sponsors may only provide instruction if it is led by a currently active Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) RiderCoach or RiderCoach Trainer.
  • Designated training range: Sponsors must provide a 160’ x 260’ area that is paved with asphalt or concrete and is free from hazards and obstacles for training. The riding area should be closed off from regular vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Designated classroom space: Sponsors must provide a clean, spacious, and comfortable classroom with the capability for use of modern audio visual and other electronic instructional equipment. MI-REP sponsors cannot use a private residence as a classroom.
  • Storage facility: Sufficient storage space must be provided for training motorcycles and course equipment.
  • Proof of insurance: MI-REP sponsors must be properly insured and cover students, motorcycles, RiderCoaches, and all other site personnel. MI-REP sponsors may purchase an MSF RiderCourse Insurance Plan or obtain comparable insurance independently.

Upon meeting all sponsor requirements, interested businesses and organizations may contact the Michigan Department of State to become an approved MI-REP sponsors. Applications will be reviewed and responded to by the MI-REP State Coordinator. Questions about the application process should be directed to the following:

Sponsors must renew their contract to provide MSF classes beginning Oct. 1 of each fiscal year. When renewing their contract, they must submit a copy of their insurance verification, an outline of the courses they are administering, the names of the RiderCoaches they are using, and their curriculum.

Sponsors that do not comply with the requirements risk losing their certification to provide MSF classes.

RiderCoaches found responsible for fraudulently handing out MSF class completion certificates will have their RiderCoach certification revoked.

Changes to the MSF program that a sponsor is offering, such as relocating classrooms or training ranges, the addition or loss of sponsors offering MSF classes, or the number of RiderCoaches should be coordinated through the MI-REP State Coordinator.
