About
This pedestrian-only street is a rite of passage for first-time travelers in Barcelona. Starting from Plaça de Catalunya, amble along the boulevard where you'll find food kiosks and spot famed attractions like the Gran Teatre del Liceu theater, the Palau de la Virreina Palace, and La Boquería market—the city’s famous marketplace. Entertainment is plenty too thanks to the human statues and caricature artists, amidst other wacky street performers. If you’re not planning to shop, enjoy a jug of sangria at any of the tapas bars and people-watch away. Besides joining city tours, Barcelona’s hop-on hop-off bus is another great way to get here. – Tripadvisor

Top ways to experience Las Ramblas
The area
Neighborhood: La Rambla
Barcelona's most famous street was once a dry riverbed. Now, La Rambla is a 1200-meter boulevard, and a major draw for visitors. During the day, La Rambla fills with pedestrians, some of which stroll past impressive human statues and artists while others take a break to people-watch while enjoying a drink at one of the many terraces. Housed here is the iconic Boqueria Market that offers one of the most varied and appetizing selections of local produce and specialty meats and treats. While it’s important for tourists to keep an eye on their belongings at all times, this area is most safely explored in the daytime and is a must see for everyone who visits.

- YayeMamaMaplewood, New Jersey852 contributionsCrowded Walkway in BarcelonaA pedestrian only street with lots of booths, shops, restaurants and La Boqueria Mercado. Street starts at Placa Catalunya and goes all the way to the water. Very many pedestrians as well as street performers as this street winds its way through the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. I do not recommend eating in any restaurants on this street as they are overpriced and geared toward tourists, and many do not really offer authentic Spanish cuisine. The menus we looked at were mostly hamburgers and fries with drinks. Eat on streets off Las Ramblas which offer you more authentic tapas and meals and much more affordable options.Visited July 2023Written July 29, 2023
- Becky VNorcross, Georgia352 contributionsFun walkNice Pedestrian Walking Area Las Ramblas is a ~1 mile pedestrian walking boulevard in Barcelona. The boulevard runs north and south and cars have a one lane road each way. Las Ramblas runs from Christopher Columbus Memorial in the south to Placa de Catalunya in the north. Fun walking in the day and at night. lots of energy!!!Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 15, 2023
- Travelbugsforlife1,115 contributionsVisit with cautionNot a must do. As I planned our trip to Barcelona people kept mentioning seeing Las Ramblas, however I also heard it was a tourist trap and a place for pick pockets. So during our trip we took a walk down the street just to see it, but we didn't shop there, we didn't eat there and we were very cautious with our belongings. Later in our trip we met a group from Australia and they told us one of the women had been pick pocketed on las ramblas and she had no idea it happened until later in the day when she went to pay for something and went to get her wallet, it was gone. So interesting to see but you need to be on high alert.Visited July 2023Written August 25, 2023
- 829appleStourbridge, United Kingdom265 contributionsOkI suppose it is a "must see" on a trip to Barcelona but like a lot of these places it seems to have lost a lot of its original charm. Lined with gift shops and restaurants, keep a tight hold of any valuables. The food market off it is well worth a visit, gets busy but can get food, tapas, drinks etc from there.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 6, 2023
- Kay MWakefield, United Kingdom97 contributionsTree lined easy walkLas Ramblas is one of the most famous streets in Barcelona. It is a tree lined pedestrian walk of 1.2km that is flanked by a road. There are "pop up" kiosks selling a range of products (hats, trinkets, etc) and many of the permanent restaurants/cafes have seating areas within the Ramblas. It's a relatively easy walk on a level service, but is always busy and has a reputation for being the pickpocket capital of the world, so need to be aware of your belongings at all times. There are a lot of high end shops and well known chain shops flanking the central walk way - so if you are into shopping, this is one place you wouldn't want to miss.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 19, 2023
- Marya72 contributionsKeep your eyes open to stay safeEl Born is a maze of interesting lanes with character and well worth exploring BUT this morning two young men tailed us wherever we went. It didn’t matter which route we took or into a store, they waited a few metres away and then followed us. We are older and think they saw us as easy targets. Finally we crossed towards the ferry terminals and they stayed on the other side looking after us. So…watch yourselves, your backpacks etc and be aware.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 20, 2023

- Debra PHonolulu, Hawaii107 contributionsLa Rambla is a must seeI would highly recommend this walk from the port area to the city center. So much to see and don’t miss the fresh food market, about 8 long rows of vendors who is proud of what they serve. Unfortunately I did order a pastry wrap with the mushrooms and cheese and olives and this certain vendor was a rip off. I would not go there again. Mostly cracked, old dough with hardly any meal inside. But we ended up getting a seafood plate from a sit down vendor and that was worth the price. Lots of gifts for family and friends is a sure thing on this strip.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 11, 2023

Was nice to walk down the street and see the area however this part of Barcelona is a hive for catching tourists. We stopped at a restaurant for a drink and had a beer and a tonic and it came to €23 - charged us €2 just for service which was carrying a tray from the bar to table (about six feet). Think the restaurant as “Steak House”. Did stop for food initially but soon changed our mind when we saw prices - unfortunately they don’t list drinks so the €23 came as a shock.

We were there before the tourism protests. We enjoyed the area, we kept away from La Rambla as there is nothing to get excited about, extremely touristy and tacky. However the restaurants at the other end looked okay. We spent most of our time in the gothic area, and looked for restaurants/cafes away from the main streets. We always had good food and service. The two different hop on hop off bus companies always seemed busy, but it’s good way to look around especially if your jet lagged!

Currently, this area is a construction site on one pave way. So, it is even more over-crowed. Avoid the "restaurants" stationed here as they are all tourist traps with over-priced bad quality food and drinks. In addition. it is very loud here as tons and tons of tourists march here. Of course, pick-pockets and annoying fake sellers are highly present as well. There are lots of beautiful place in this city - this street unfortunately is not among them.

We had one overnight in Barcelona ore-cruise and we’re staying near Las Ramblas. We were very wary of visiting given its reputation for pickpockets it turned out to be a lot better than I feared. The pedestrianised area is quite wide and, despite it being c7pm it wasn’t too crowded. Absolutely no signs of trouble (and we were on the lookout). I thought the shops all looked good - albeit very tourist-orientated.

When I went to Barcelona in 2012, Las Ramblas was already a tourist area BUT it was still charming. There was a variety of stores, restaurants, bars etc. It was a beautiful walking street with lots to see.
Fastforward to June 2024 - I was so excited to show my husband and best friend this exciting area of Barcelona. Oh boy was I disappointed. Most of the nice stores have been moved to other streets. Crappy souvenirs stores and late night kebab shops have taken their place. Those touristy but still cute restaurants are gone - truly only bad restaurants left. Finally, the street is dirty! It's covered in graffiti and people just standing around looking sketchy either selling drugs or targeting people for pickpocketing.
TLDR: DO NOT GO.
I hope that the city intervenes and tries to clean up this area. Yes, it will always be a tourist trap but it doesn't need to be as bad as it currently is.

Short answer: no.
Long answer: yes, it can be two very different things, but not at the same time.
If you want to experience La Rambla as the bustling, crowded, noisy, shop-lined street with pick pockets in abundance, the best time to go is peak tourist seasons. Late morning through late evening should provide you with plenty of action, and the pick pockets will appreciate the opportunity to lighten your pockets and bags.
If, on the other hand, you want to experience a peaceful, tree-lined pedestrian street, the best time to go is shortly after sunrise. Yes, you read that correctly. Yes, I know it is illegal in Spain to wake before noon. But, trust me, if you are able to get yourself to either the Columbus monument or Catalonia Square early enough, you’ll experience La Rambla the way very few people do.
Bonus tip: peak tourist season is barely noticeable this early in the morning.

We spent an enjoyable morning walking around this famous street and had a decent lunch in a Cafe on one the the side streets. Today most shops have a heavy focus on tourism and football shirts which like so many other historic spots serves to dilute the experience. It's great however that there are so few cars. Enjoy.

Too much people, too much pickpockets and too much people selling useless crap. Las Ramblas is a gold cave for pickpockets. I don’t recommend if you’re a new tourist in Barcelona and if you aren’t aware of pickpocketing.

Great walking street offering something for nearly everyone! Every city ought to have this kind of pedestrian street in the a central area. Las Ramblas is lined with food and souvenir stalls, restaurants and bars. There are always street performers and... pick pockets! Be careful or you'll find yourself poorer!
Note that most of the restaurants with open-air seating on Las Ramblas serve third-rate food at high prices. They also practice deception by not listing prices for drinks anywhere on their menus. When visitors order a beer or sangria, they are inevitably served a large fun-looking glass, but the fun is quickly diminished when they see the high charge (13-15 euros for a beer that you coud get for half that one block off Las Ramblas). My suggestion is to enjoy the fun walking about Las Ramblas, but look elsewhere to eat and drink.

It is a picturesque street, but also a very crowded street. There are many shops and restaurants, but not many worth stopping at. It is easier to shop and eat at other locations.

My husband and 12 year old son and I will be visiting Barcelona this summer. We will stay 3 days before our cruise and 4 days after the cruise. For the first 3 days I’ve booked an apartment at Carrer Nou de la Rambla 53. After reading general reviews, I must say I’m a little nervous and I’m playing with the idea of cancelling this reservation. Could anyone shed some light on this area for me? I need to make a quick decision. Thank you.

If you are going to spend several days in Barcelona and you are not in a rush I would not stay in Las Ramblas. But it also depends on what you are looking for. Las Ramblas is a very visited place and noisy. You must go if you are in Barcelona but i would not stay there. At the end of the day you want to be able to relax and to have a nice dinner, you will not be able to do that in Las Ramblas. The metro in Barcelona works really well, so as long as you are near a metro stop you will be able to go anywhere. Thus you don’t need to be in a centric place. There is lots to do and see in Barcelona. If you decide to stay in Las Ramblas then stay on the other side of Las Ramblas street, in the Gothic Quarter. I would suggest that you look for places near the Arenas de Barcelona or near the Sant Station. The AC hotels would be a good choice if you want a hotel without spending too much money. Enjoy, Barcelona is a great city.

hi
it's depends with your pleasure activities.
It you like shopping I would not recommend Las rambles stores – tourist traps, high prices, poor quality
You have few malls and outlets at the city.
If you like to see sites and love architectures, I would recommend planning long days – or as much time you must visit:
La Familia Sagrada – min 2 hours + get tickets online and arrive near scheduled time
Casa Battelo + Casa Mila – 1-2 hours per location.
If you cannot walk or have the full tour – take the city bus and see the sites from outside
Hope you have great time!
